How do we fix this team?

The Jazz were 6-10 exactly a year ago. They're now 8-8.

They averaged just 99.0 PPG, 19.6 APG and 16.4 TOPG. They're at 106.8 PPG with 23.2 APG and 15.4 TOPG so far this season, despite being terrible from the line (71% to 83% last season), which has also cost them a couple of games. They could easily be 10-6 if they had just made their FTs.

Relative to the rest of the league, they were 26th in ORTG and 9th in DRTG with a -2.9 NETRTG whereas they're 22nd and 14th now with a -1.1 NETRTG, and that's including the 50-point dud against the Mavs that's had a strong impact due to the small sample size.

This board was going nuts a year ago, at such an early point of the season people were questioning Mitchell, Rubio, Ingles, Gobert, the FO and even Snyder... And you could read threads titled "Trade Gobert", "We Suck", "It's time for a true direction", "Bring back the triple wing and bring Rubio off the bench", "All-in for the tank" and of course "Central Tank Command: the official thread", which was already 13 pages long. Fast forward two months into mid January and threads were even worse. Fast forward a couple more weeks and people were starting to hop on the playoff bandwagon and singing Rudy, Rubio and Mitchell's praises, saying "I'm sorry" and "I'm so happy to be eating crow".

Stop whining, have some patience, and f***ing learn from the past. The Jazz are in a better position than they were a year ago, they're adapting to the new defensive rules, they're healthier and they're better pretty much across the board. They may ultimately fall out of the playoffs... or they may end up getting HCA just as easily, just like any team in the conference other than the Warriors, the Rockets (another fanbase that was freaking out stupidly 10 days ago) or the bottom feeders. They are not a championship contender (you could say no one is these days except for the All-NBA team playing in GS), but these guys were great on the second half of last season and they made some noise in the playoffs before Ricky got injured. Give them time, let them find their groove, deal with the bad nights and celebrate the good ones, and let's see where the team is come the All-Star break.

I do remeber the trade gobert trade. Whoever made that one was a dumbass.

There is only one thing I would edit. I agree that we should show more patience, but I think we should see where the team is in early January not wait for the All Star Break.

Teams with talent like Washington, Miami, Boston, and others might be looking to make deals. I would rather strike early than wait when prices might go up.

tl;dr

I don't remember the core of the board going nuts at the beginning of last year. The expectations weren't high. In fact, outside of Archie (lol), the core of the board was extremely patient with Donovan.

If I recall correctly he thought Donovan wasn't athletic enough lol.

We've had, what, three or four games now of downright horrible free throw shooting and **** 3P%. Ricky fixed it a little last night by hitting his FTs in the 4th, but I really feel that if shots start falling at a reasonable clip again, we'll look considerably better. We have the same major problem as before, though, for the playoffs: Who outside of Donovan can score when defense tightens up and the going gets tough? I really think Exum looks great at times, but he desperately needs to finish better at the rim. I'm more concerned about that than his shooting.

If we renounce all our free agents (Rubio, Burks, Sefelosha, Udoh) and don't pick up Favors option we would have plenty of cap space to do this. Although I highly doubt Harris leaves the Clippers.

I don’t think we have that money... I think Tobias can get the max that’s starts at 32-33M. I think most we can clear is 43m ish with caphold a for roster spots and our first round pick and such.

But part of that is a serious shakeup in the main units. We can still only play five at a time, obviously, so it's not just about acquiring guys, it's about what the guys on the floor can AND CAN'T do that dictate how all of this works.

Neither Rubio or Favors provide anything the Jazz are missing right now. Elaborate offenses are great at masking deficiencies of skill, but only if the shots go in. I'm fine with an entire offense of Gobert-whoever PnRs, attacking mismatches, and Mitchell rushing the rim with kick-out options. That's basically all Houston did last year (+ a very good defense).

Best post I've read here in a long while. I'm looking for something to nitpick but all I can find is a lack of Gobert love in your previous post.

If Dennis Lindsey decides to go through the entire offseason and doesnt make one adjustment to this team by the trade deadline then it will be a montrosity.

I honestly wouldn't tinker too much with the current roster. I think DL will look for potential changes, but he isn't going to give terry rozier 15mil...lol....rozier is so over-hyped im sorry, but he's not all that.

The most cap space we could possibly have available is $65 million if we sent all team option guys packing and renounced all 4 unrestricted free agents.
I'm going to say that we keep Niang and O'Neale because they are cheap salary development players.
So I'll say we have $68 for 10 players (9 and the draft pick hold).

So to answer your question, we could give Tobias Harris the full max at $32.7 million which puts us at around $100. After that, we would have around $9 million to spend on free agents. If we were to find a way to dump Bradley or if we let Niang and/or O'Neale go, we could have enough to give Rozier $12-15.

I would love to get Harris, but LA isn't letting go unless they get two monster names. That ain't happening so Harris isn't going anywhere.

People soon forget how amazing Rozier was with the Celtics to end last season and through the playoffs. In 21 playoff games as the starting PG, he played 30mpg shooting 39.4% from 3, getting 14.5ppg, 5.2rpg and 4.2apg. He always plays good defense. As Mitchell evolves, DM is going to get more of the ball to run the offense. We need a guy who can play off him as much as run the offense. Rozier fits that mold as well as anybody who is a realistic target this summer. Added Bonus - for as much as Donovan loves Rubio, DM would probably love to have his fellow Louisville alum with him in Utah.

Maybe trade for Kevin Love or John Wall if you're willing to restructure things in the next 2-3 years or pay tax.

If not, trade Rubio for a different PG that makes sense with this team.
