With the drafts seen in recent memory, I’d be surprised if they are in the playoffs in five years. I want to stay positive in hopes Ainge does indeed have that draft mojo everyone talks about.

I like your enthusiasm, but NY is going to buckle.

At this point I don’t see it happening until the trade deadline and with that there are two scenarios
1. The jazz are around 500 and Mitchell is playing amazing so we see if we can squeak into the playoffs through a play in game and deal him in the next off season
2. The Jazz just completley fall apart as a team but Donovan is stuffing the stat sheet and the knicks are hovering in serious contention and pull the trigger for him at the deadline

I just disagree. I think New York gets serious here before training camp when there’s a real deadline that impacts these decisions. Every indication is that the Jazz, the Knicks, Mitchell, CAA, Adidas, the NY media and both fan bases all want this deal to happen.

Whether they like it or not, Utah has more leverage here due to Donovan’s contract status. I just think New York as an institution expects this deal to happen now and the Knicks can less afford to NOT make the deal than they can afford to pay a premium price to get him.

Honestly, 2 seasons.

I'm not trying to be a diznick but people on here are damaged. The Jazz are - hands down - the second best small market run team in the league. New Orleans now being first - as soon as they hired some guys that actually cared they became very real. Now they're giving you a lineup of McCollum - Herb - Ingram - Zion - Hayes. That took about 18 months of being functional.

The Lakers were slated to be a top 2 in the West up until latest year. Until Memphis became that team...

We all age in life way faster than we thought we would. For NBA players, times that by about 3. The Warriors victory over the Celtics was stunning for that simple reason.

Teams fall off. This Jazz team is purposely structured not to fall off. watch.

I think the Jazz will miss the POs in the next two seasons, at least. How fast they get there depends on whether they're able to draft in the next two offseasons. That said, Ainge probably wants to have a competitive team, while he drafts young talent with other teams' picks he's acquired.

Jazz need two or three foundational level players, and they'll need to find at least two of them in the draft.

In Danny Angel’s 18 year tenure as Celtic’s CEO, they missed the playoffs three times in two rebuilds. Not once did he go scorched earth, electing to keep key veterans like Perkins, Pierce and big Al (had Rondo) through the first rebuild (05-07) at which point Danny traded for Garnett and Allen and won a title in 08. After the Boston (Brooklyn) massacre in 13-14 they did another mini-tank retaining Gerald Wallace, Rondo, Humphries and Sullinger. Back in the playoffs the following year.

And that doesn’t even factor in the Mitchell trade deadline scenario that @Domino so eloquently detailed above. I think Danny’s got plan A, B and possibly even C depending on when the big domino falls and how. Assuming nothing happens till the deadline, Dok and Kessler step up and with tested Warriors like Mitchell, Bogey, Clarkson, Beverly (or Conley), Beasley and Vandy we rolling through to the second round baby. If not, we keep Conley or Beverly, Clarkson, Beasley, Vandy, give Simone and Leandro minutes as well as former Knicks or Heat, take a swipe at Victor and back in the hunt the following year.

I think it's possible we end up with by far the least talented team in the NBA next year. In other rebuilds we have at least started off with young players who we hoped could turn in to potential stars. Many of the packages discussed so far would bring back 0 potential stars. I'm not sure if there is another good comparison of a team that started a rebuild with so little as far as young players with potential.

Young players typically don't start playing winning basketball until year 3. Most likely our future stars are drafted in 2023 and 2024, which means they probably aren't really winning until 2026 or 2027.

I semi agree with this. Unfortunately, DL left the cupboard bare trying to win with a Mitchell, Gobert tandem that featured heavy assets being spent on multiple point guards and backup centers.

I do think that he’ll be able to flip the script quickly - even if he burns the whole house down to the foundation. Gotta stack assets first to be in that place though.

OK, one other factor that might extend the time before we make the playoffs again is the cap jump. There aren't going to be as many bad contracts in 3 years hamstringing teams from improving. Also, since we aren't a free agent destination we might be at a disadvantage when we want to start adding talent and everyone has cap room.

How high is the cap expected to jump over the next few seasons?
