How do you know he's playing a role? That's your opinion based on absolutely nothing except your "gut." So basically you are the ONLY one who believes he's disingenuous. Maybe it's time to find a new team if you can't enjoy the jazz and their fantastic rookie.I don’t disagree. But it doesn’t make it genuine. It means he’s playing his role well is all.
Sure you can find stars who left for other teams like Durant and Lebron. But there are plenty who haven't. Let's ignore some of the players like Jordan, Bird, Magic, Kobe, etc. who played for big markets or who were NBA icons. For every Paul George or Kyrie irving there are:
Stockton and Malone: lifer's (I'm gonna ignore Karl's final year with the Lakers).
Duncan and Robinson: Spurs for their entire careers
Curry. Still with the W's.
Westbrook, Marc Gasol, DeRozan, Wall... I could go on.
And there are others who may have wanted to stay with their teams, but were pushed out as their teams rebuilt (Griffin, Cousins, etc.).
I get it, we've been burned by the likes of Hayward and Deron Williams (who appeared to be leaving so he was traded). But let's not sour on Mitchell (and Gobert). The key is for DL to keep improving the team. He put Hayward through contract and rebuilding hell and those were two of the factors - supposedly - that left Hayward with a bitter taste. Lindsey WON'T make the same mistakes with Mitchell. It's an easy contract negotiation with Mitchell in 3 years; you just take him down to Zions and open the bank vault for the next 5 seasons.
What's important for stars remaining with their original teams is to build a contender. Jazz can do that with Gobert and Mitchell. They also have a coach who is liked and respected by the players. And as JJ said last season, there are no knuckleheads on the team (and I don't see that has changed this year). A lot can happen in 7 more years, but Utah is setting themselves up for a long run of relevancy like the Stockton/Malone era. Donovan is getting recognized big time even though he plays in Utah. That's also important. My gut tells me he's a genuinely good guy, not a two-faced character viewing Utah as a 7-8 yr prison sentence.
