like is this some meta thing here? trying to illustrate the point i was trying to get across earlier? are the mods saying that ****** is such a reactionary word that some uses of it should be censored and silenced, even in the context of commenting on an aspect of its censorship? because um point proved i guess? though comparing the jazzfanz community to a bunch of high schoolers unable to handle the discussion could be, um kind of offensive to everyone here but

at any rate, I'd be curious to hear KEK's opinions since he teaches this stuff, and perhaps Conan too, though I think he's a science teacher so it may not be quite as applicable to him - and any others who teach at the junior high or high school level.

and no haha you're right, the letter of the law was broken. i just find your judgment to be hilarious first in the context of my post, and second in the context of the thread. like four posts before mine you hinted at the importance of including lessons on the background and history of prejudice when it comes to teaching huck finn, because the context of the language of the novel is important in realizing why it's used. yet i link to a relevant video that examines a facet of our interaction WITH THE SAME DISPUTED WORD, but because it uses THE WORD, the video is yanked. then, when i approach a "teacher" to confirm why it was removed, i'm ignored and instead sent to detention, to the same room where people like clutch and hopper, who actively seek to skate the rules and frustrate others, reside. it's just so goddamn perfect, that the sentiment of a relevant, well intentioned post is forgotten because OH GOD HE SAID ******. hahaha, you and kicky couldn't have cooked up a better demonstration of this professor's frustration if you tried

Who reads Huck Finn in Public Schools anymore anyway? What public school still has enough money to purchase books these days?
What great 19th century work doesn't have language that would be considered politically incorrect today?
If kids aren't old enough to understand the 19th century way to describe African Americans, then they probably aren't old enough to be reading the book. Some of the greatest writing done in the past few centuries contain language that recently would be considered offensive. To me, reading this type of book is a look upon our history and the way peoples used to be described. Changing the language used greatly takes away from the historical benefits.
It also puts us on a slippery slope. What great work will be the next to be edited? How to Kill a Mockingbird? The Jungle? Common Sense?

I teach high-school math at a local community college. For my students, I would probably recommend the sanitized version of Huckleberry Finn over the original, especially if there were clear notations on where the changes where made.
I'm fairly sure that if the proscribed words had had the current the connotation when Twain was writing, he would have never included them. You might refer to this as a "dynamic equivalence" translation, like the New International Version of the Bible.
I'm also sure that Huckleberry Finn is a great book for teens, either way.
