The Thriller

Ummmm I don't see how "the translation" screwed it up here. How much longer until he gets himself fired for his mouth?

https://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7795152/ozzie-guillen-miami-marlins-suspended-five-games

"The interpretation didn't come out as I wanted," Guillen said in Spanish, according to ESPN's translation. "I was thinking in Spanish and I said the wrong thing in English."

Asked how the statement "I love Fidel Castro" could be misconstrued, Guillen once again said he was talking about how surprised he was that Castro had been able to stay in power for so long.

Hehe Ohhhhhhh Doug Robinson...

https://www.deseretnews.com/article...e-Guillen-reaches-new-level-of-ignorance.html

Guillen, a Venezuelan, told Time, "I love Fidel Castro." He went on: "I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that *$&%! is still here."

This was two days after he announced that he gets drunk at a hotel bar after every game and has been doing this "for 25, 28 years. It doesn't change."

Maybe he can put the Fidel Castro comments on his bar tab.

Even by Guillen's standards this was over the top (he tends to talk in Karl Malone-like streams of consciousness, except with lots of Major League profanity).

Talk about clueless and insensitive. For starters, the Marlins' new $2 billion stadium, which Miami will pay off in 40 years, is located in Little Havana, just down the street from Elian Gonzalez's house.

What was this man thinking? It's difficult to come up with comparisons, but let's try.

Would he stand on the site of the 9/11 disaster and proclaim, "I love Muslim terrorists? You know why? Lots of people have wanted to kill them and they're still here."

Maybe he could travel to Israel and announce, "I love Hitler. Too bad he's not around."

Or Uganda: "Idi Amin — now there was a great guy."

All I can say is...

I am bilingual myself (English and Spanish) and I can see translation problems when your profeciency at one of the languages is much less than the other.

I do not buy this guys excuse.

It's Ozzie. What do you expect? The guy is dumb as a rock and just says whatever comes to his mind. He probably meant it in the context that he admires him as a leader, someone who was powerful and stayed in power for a long time despite having many enemies. Of course it was dumb to say, but Ozzie has a long history of saying dumb things.

I agree it was a dumb thing to say but suspending him is just as dumb (if not more so).

I agree he is an idiot.
The sad thing is that at least I respected him for being honest about how he feels at first (whether I agree or not).
A ton of our elected officials agree with his love of Castro as well as that great guy Chavez, that is the sad part.
At least, for a minute, Ozzie was honest about it.

Ozzie is a moron and he should have known better. Especially considering his new managerial location that has many Cuban Americans.

Who gives a ****? He's here to coach baseball, I don't give a flying **** about his political views and if he likes Castro or not, if he wins games, that's all that matters. It's not like he's cheating or anything, I don't see the big deal here. Also the article comparing Castro to 9/11 and Hitler is ridiculous. Castro was not a good means, but he was nowhere near as bad as Hitler. A journalist using an exaggeration like really comes off as unprofessional.

And Leukemia might not be as bad as brain cancer in some circumstances. Point is, they are both cancer. Just because Castro isn't/wasn't as bad as Hitler doesn't mean an idiot like Ozzie should be out there praising him. It's common sense. I guess he lacks that.

I think it's more about him working where he does and saying it.

It may have been a stupid thing to say depending on your political view point. However it is no reason to suspend the guy.

Agreed. I brought that up in my first post when I wrote, "Ozzie is a moron and he should have known better. Especially considering his new managerial location that has many Cuban Americans."

For all I care, he shouldn't be suspended. It's not my call. I can see why Loria and company did it though. They are trying to get fans out to their new ballpark. It doesn't help when you manager decides he is going to praise a very controversial person in most likely the worst location in the United States to do it in.

I'm not amused in the least bit by this story and wish ESPN, Call 700, and every other blowhard on the AM dial would just shut the hell up about it already. Were they all hit in the head repeatedly with lawn darts?

Why don't they go back to actually broadcasting sporting events? I can't watch two seconds of that once great program SportsCenter that's turned into a bad off spin of E!'s Look What American Dip****s Did Today, with a few blips of actual sports thrown in here and there so they can still use a sports moniker. If that's what gave me my fix then I'd strap a camera to my own *** and walk through West Valley Mall.

I don't give a damn about the Manning situation for 20 days, I don't care what T.O. is doing in his driveway, and I sure as hell don't give one cleaned and sterilized rats *** what a drunkard spouts off after drowning a case worth of martini's. You want me to perk up over Ozzie then do an hour long special of what the guy is drinking that makes him say the things he does. Put on the Ozzie G. and Ozzie O. Get Wasted show.

You're missing my point. Obviously praising Castro is dumb, but the journalist comparing praising Castro to comparing Hitler is shoddy work. It's just sensationalist journalism.

I agree with trigg. He may be a 2nd tier dictator a la Hussein, but he's still a brutal dictator. Would you feel better if the journalist had replaced Hitler with Kim Jung Ill?

It would make more sense. Castro didn't try to kill an entire nation of people like Hitler.
