What a hilarious story.
Vice reports that the idea for the pink mass came about in April, after the WBC threatened to protest the funerals of the Boston Marathon bombing victims. The website compared the the pink mass to "the Mormon practice of baptizing the dead, only much gayer."
I have a hard time believing that the Westboro baptist church is anything other than a media-hyped organization to accomplish their agenda by giving coverage. According to Wikipedia, they claim 40 members. Every time there's a national tragedy, all they need to do is state they're going to protest and the media pounces on the story and hypes it up. How often have you ever actually seen them follow through on their protesting plans? Still, the media gives coverage. Why? There are groups that molest children, distribute child porn, murder people, etc. that get much, much, much less coverage than this minuscule band of nincompoops that it makes you question whether the idea is to continue to push the belief that this type of extremism is more mainstream and to caricaturize Christianity.
