I.D. required (round 2)

Because nobody would ever say, "I just live up the street and am headed home" when they are casing a neighborhood or stalking an ex.

They would say that. So in order to prevent that we should submit to ID verification on the sidewalk to make sure we have a government approved purpose for being on that sidewalk?

It's a public sidewalk subject to scrutiny beyond what you would experience on private property. Asking for ID is one of the first thing any cop asks when they approach you. If you don't have it, more often than not you are detained, for at least a little bit, until they can verify you are who you say you are. Having ID in public is already pretty much standard procedure.

Are you seriously advocating ID checks for people walking on the sidewalk?

No. I am not advocating random ID check points for people walking up and down the sidewalk.

OK, so only for dark skinned people. Whew, I was worried I would be inconvenienced there for a second.

Right, you're advocating for specific check points looking at every person near any location the government deems to have a high threat level.

While ID checks amoung other things at government sites can be a good thing I can certainly see that slippery slope.

We're discussing things here as if there's some nefarious force at work here.

In reality, there are some obvious instances of need for id's. The reason for my posting this thread was intended for nothing much more than a cheap shot at irony... and the lowliness of partisanship.

Would the author say Sweden and Germany are totally corrupted? Or, are Americans just morally weaker?

Ah, but we Americans are different. We are an exceptional people, don't you know that? Other Western Democracies (e.g., Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Austria, Finland) can create thriving economies coupled with generous social programs, while maintaining high levels of education and literacy, a skilled workforce, low crime, ample civic spirit, tolerance, but such entitlements only serve to corrupt our unique, and superior pull yourself up the bootstraps, rugged individualism culture.

America is unique, that's true. We do suffer from certain disfunctions not found in other Western Democracies, but blaming them on our high levels of entitlements, which tend to be smaller than these other countries, certainly seems facile. Clearly, there's more to the story.
