I got bad news about Marvin Williams

So, just to clarify, and because it doesn't seem to have been touched on yet in this thread.......what spot was Marvin Williams drafted?

Most of the hate comes from where he was drafted. Atlanta used a top 2 pick on him.
Yes. That's a great point. Considering the careers of the #3 and #4 players (and even the #1 when he's not hurt), you have to view Marvin's career to date as disappointing. He was also EXTREMELY raw coming out, and it was acknowledged on draft boards he'd take time to develop.

BabyPeterzz also has a good point. Marvin is not one of the top options on that team. he only averages 8 shots per game. I see him getting a few more shots in Utah (provided Jefferson is traded). Marvin can average 12-14 pts. and 5 rebounds on 45%/35% shooting. That's what we need from a SF.

Looking at the TOTAL impact on us this trade accomplishes, it looks like an upgrade to me, despite Marvin's perceived weaknesses in Atlanta.
Mo replaces Harris, improves our offense, some dropoff in D, as Mo is smallish (6'1").
Hayward replaces Bell at SG. Solid upgrade; better defender, playmaker and a bigger and better rebounder.
Marvin replaces Hayward at SF. Solid upgrade. Not sure of his D, but a stronger rebounder as he's as big as Millsap, and better jump shooter as a SF than Hayward. HOPEFULLY he'll pick up our offense.

Do you even understand the concept of this thread?

They dont know Harris sucks because he hasnt played for them yet.

The day after Al got traded I checked out the Wolves forum. It sounded very similar.

I agree some of the joy is because he was number 2 overall, but that still dont change they dont care for him.

wat?

You know who else was a bust on their draft team? How about Favors???

There is a very real possibility that Williams will have a similar change to what Favors had coming here. He gets a little respect, he gets the ball passed to him, and he is friends with his teamates. Oh, and the fans cheer for him rather than boo him.

Besides, he's not making an unreasonable amount of money for what he's putting out, in fact I wouldn't be horrified if we re-signed him for the same amount when his contract is up ASSUMING that he improves his game by about 25%.

In order to get picked in the top 3 a player usually has to have certain raw talents that cannot be learned. He has these talents, Millsap doesn't. No matter how hard Millsap works, there are some things that Williams can do that he can't.

(not that Millsap doesn't bring great things to the table, in fact if Williams spends some time with Millsap and picks up his work ethic, Williams might actually come close to his potential. hmm, guess i'm bandwagoning.)

Nice try.

Ill take Millsap, you can have Marvin

All I am saying is there is a chance we dont like his game once he gets here.

If he can play decent defence, rebound at the wing, and hit those open 3's at around 36% - if he can just do those things, it's a big WIN for us as an exchange for Harris.

There is NO drop off in D from Harris to Mo.

Mo Williams

Opp FG Percentage: 40.08%

Devin Harris

Opp FG Percentage: 44.2%

They do. Did you see Hollinger's column?

Hawks are playing a high stake poker IMO. Who will blink first? Orlando is still in talks with the Nets - don't count them out yet.

King is doing the right thing, playing Orlando & Hawks off each other right now.

Atlanta wanted a #2 pick out of Marvin Williams. The Jazz want a wing who can hit threes, defend and rebound. That is why he will be successful here and not there.

p.s. I was pissed because Harrison Barnes slipped to GS's pick. I told friends and family that even if Barnes just came into Utah, ran the offense and hit threes, I would have loved him. Marvin Williams can do all those things. This could trade is anywhere from a good trade to a spectacular one, depending on if Williams just puts forth a tiny bit of interest.

Great post

The Johnson deal is done unless I'm reading ESPN wrong. The Nets have relinquished Howard forever.

If we had drafted him #2 overall, I'd be pissed. We traded a throw in from the Dwill trade to get him though. He is 26 and still has potential if Corbin can somehow figure out how to maximize his potential. Players like Williams tend to do better in a new situation.
