What's new

I love Bronco.

Ok, so everybody and their dog knew that BYU was left out because of religion. So Bronco comes out and says the exact same thing over a month later and it's worthy of an "I love Bronco" thread? C'mon Trout, I expect you to be on your game a bit more than this.

The funniest thing I heard from MWC Media Day? Bronco proclaiming that BYU will never lose a single recruit to Utah just because Utah is in the Pac 10 now. I actually believe he's right for 2 reasons (but they're not the reasons BYU fans are thinking of):

1- For the most part, Utah and BYU are already going after different types of recruits and have been for quite some time. Utah recruits for pure atheleticism and works the players into positions after the fact. BYU recognizes positions of need and then fills those positions.

2-If for some reason Utah and BYU are going after an in-state kid a couple of years down the road, I have no doubt that as soon as the kid starts to lean towards Utah- even slightly, that BYU will pull the scholarship offer and proclaim that they "wanted to go in a different direction". That way it doesn't look like a loss to Utah in the recruiting column.

I've actually heard about that type of thing happening before and to be fair, I've heard people grumble that both schools are guilty of it. When Utah feels they may lose a kid to BYU, they shut down all interest and turn their attention to another prospect, thus making it look like they didn't "lose" the kid to BYU.

I guess the biggest difference is that Utah's coach isn't on sports radio arrogantly proclaiming that they will "never" lose a recruit to BYU. Mostly because Utah's coach is not a mono-toned, douche-bag, idiot and he's smart enough to realize that losing a recruit every once in a while to your in-state rival is just the nature of the beast.

Is there any Utah fan who doesn't admit that it was purely a religious thing?

And I don't feel bad as a Zoobie just because Boise State is a better team than Utah anyways, and their fans are even stupider. That will be an even more fun rivalry.

A kid who wants to go to BYU won't go anywhere else no matter what conference they are in. I don't understand why Ute fans can't grasp this concept.

Wait. People, other than Jazzgal, actually root for the other team, "for the good of the conference"?

Seriously? I heard that all the time from family and friends, and radio call-ins on 1280 - drove me crazy. Wanting them to lose made me look like I was turning my back on the conference - especially in bowl games. Now I can hate in peace. :)

Maybe when you sober up and get the hooker back out on the corner you can reread what I wrote in the OP. The Raspberry is NEVER off his game.

I'm a Ute fan and I def agree with you.

I think the whole thing went down like this at a Pac 10 meeting...

Pac 10 commissioner Larry Scott- "Hey fellas I called this meeting cuz we need to get BYU in our conference ASAP. They have killer academics, they do boatloads of research, and they learn good. Also, I have been impressed by their on the field performance with all the games that they won and stuff. They have beat their rivals up north, like tons of times in the last few years. They have become so dominant that they have their own bowl game every year in Las Vegas. Las Vegas has multiple casinos and was featured in the movie "The Hangover" which is one of the highest grossing comedies of all time. So yeah, I guess you could say Vegas is doin' big things. Let's jump on this gravy train dudes."

Southern Cal President- "Sounds pretty cool, I guess. Do they have any stadiums or anything? Or will we have to build them some?"

Pac 10 Comish- "Haha. Thats the best part, they have their own stadiums. Whats cool is that their stadiums are super big. Like, you go to the basketball stadium and you cant believe how big it is and then just when you think stadium building couldnt get any bigger you see the football stadium and it IS bigger. Plus, its cool cuz they put in a mountain that has a letter y on it right behind the big stadium."

Washington University President:- "Hey Larry, Whats bigger? The Stadium or the mountains?"

Everybody- "LOL"

Pac 10 Comish "Good one! I dunno, but it sure is close! Ok, boys this looks like a no brainer. They got learning and stuff at the school, they party in Vegas at the end of every season, and they have large buildings. I know its kind of a formality at this point, but lets put it to a vote. Anybody object?"

[silence]

Pac 10 Comish- "Alright that settles it. Lets call them up to tell them the good news!"

University of California President- "OH ****!"

Pac 10 Comish- "What is it University of California President?"

University of California President- "I just googled byu and it says they're all Mormon and stuff. Gross."

Pac 10 Comish- "Yuck. Damn it, I knew they were too good to be true. Everything else about them is perfect. FML. Ok, any thoughts on a plan b? Honestly, I dont even care anymore."

Stanford President- "There is a school a little ways North of byu, in the growing city of Salt Lake City. I say we just go with that."

Pac 10 Comish- "Whats it called? Do they have any notable sports achievements? They dont have anything to do with the mormons do they?"

Stanford President- "Its called The University of Utah. No they have not done much in sports lately. No Vegas Bowls for quite some time, I'm afraid. But, they have zilch to do with anything mormon, and to be honest I'm super hungry and we need to wrap this **** up."

Pac 10 Comish- "Cool. As long as they have nothing at all to do with mormonism then I'm down. Ok so Utah College it is. Lets just call em up on the way to Chilis. Im thinking about ordering the fajitas."

Believe it or not, there is, has, and always will be in-state kids that will be on the fence about either school. Don't get me wrong, I completely understand that 95% of the time, BYU is going after a type of player that is going to BYU for the BYU experience, which Utah cannot compete with.

However, you're being willfully ignorant if you don't think Utah's status as a Pac 12 school won't eventually sway a player or two who quite possibly would have went to BYU if both schools were still in the MWC. A good example would be H. Unga. I've read that even before his discipline problems Harvey was considering both schools. If you're an in-state kid that doesn't hate either school, you're crazy to believe that the option of playing in the Pac 12 as opposed to the MWC won't play into some kid's decision down the line. Hell, even if it happens once or twice in 10 years, that's still more often than the "never" that your coach so arrogantly proclaimed.

Granted, I admit that it's simply not going to happen that often because of the difference in recruiting philosiphy between the schools. And Stern, I have no problem admitting that BYU was left out of the Pac 10 for religious reasons. However, I'm not losing too much sleep over it. Utah's been given a great opportunity and I expect them to do just fine.

Probably waiting for the girls to leave.

This is one of the greatest pictures ever on the internets. I love the posters, the lustful looks from the chubby chick on the floor, Willy Aames' pornstache, and especially the Budweiser stein on the table. You just know that was Steve's room. Some bear over the rainbow. Case closed.

It was also really nice of that flight attendant to stop by to give Steve a trim.
