What's new

I need a new car: crowd sourcing JFC for recommendations and warnings

Ok, I'm back on the car search. I want to get one by October or so. I'm still pretty sauced up about 3rd generation 4Runners. But I'm wondering if any of you know anything about 4th generation 4runners. Especially you, b_line.

thanks.

I love'm.

I want this car with every fiber of my being.

Stick with Subaru - no one ever seems to have problems with them.

Great vehicles. Get the V8 03-05. V6 is prone to head gasket failure. 06-09 v8s have aip issue, but can be bypassed.

Definitely skip the 03 and 04 v6. Only has a 4 spd transmission. All other models have 5 speed. V8 has timing belt service due at 90k miles. Keep this in mind when buying as it is an additional $1000 expense.

aip issue? what's that?

Do you really need all the space, power, and off-road capability that a 4Runner provides-- or could you get by with a well-made wagon or crossover?

I'm sure you've thought it through And the 4Runner's rep is known by all-- but I just figured I'd ask either way.

I'm always blown away with how much i can fit in my C230 Liftback, with a roof rack too.

I've been driving a Subaru Outback since 2001. My outdoor activities have expanded recently, which require more room and ground clearance.

I've thought about putting 1" spacers, bigger tires, and a scrape plate on the wagon and just rolling with it -- but some of these places I'm going are waaaay out there, and I've become weary taking a 220,000 mile car out there (especially if it isn't really serving all my purposes anyway).

PS: 4th generation 4Runners are insanely heinous-- why wouldn't you just get a FJ Cruiser at that point?

edit: also, I personally would never go RHD but cheap, off-road capable vehicles can be had on that front.
