sounds like u need a more off-road capable vehicle.
 
if I were you I would specifically scour Japanese importers in the Cali area that bring in Mercedes Gs from the 90s cuz they're commonly between 8-15 thousand dollars in price (for models like the G320 diesel, which don't murder on gas) and I really am a big fan of how they look & what they offer. It's also THE off-road vehicle. They will also mostly be primarily LHD because Mercedes didn't make a lot of RHD cars for Japan in those days. The KMs are also always low & the Japanese are notorious for taking care of their stuff.
 
A Tacoma might be a good fit. My buddy had a three door mid 2000's. Reliable, reasonable gas mileage, good offroad, truck bed. Avoid the Ranger of similar years(don't know about newer ones).

I am looking for something that costs more, is bigger, and guzzles gas like Las Vegas whores guzzle rope.
 
A 4Runner is perfectly capable for what I'm demanding of off-road performance.

A 3rd Gen 4Runner is actually the only car I'm 100% sold on. If I could find a rare one with low miles, I'd snap it up.

I'm with you on the third gen 4 runners. If you go 4th gen. I think what jazzgasm said is the way to go. Sadly, the v8 is probably better in the 4th gen. I love the v6 from third gen.

At this point though I might read up on the xterra. Don't go with the 04 xterra though, they had a lot of problems.

The problem that you go with with a fourth gen 4runner is that they are less unique than the third gen, more similar to the Land cruiser, larger chassis and stuff. If you can find a sub 150k third gen, it's the best.
