If NY amnestied Billups - do we want him??

I'm not a lawyer, but this can't be correct. If he retires, he's not fulfilling his contract. The salary gets voided. He has to show up, but he doesn't have to try or care which is what I think he's saying.

What if he shows up and plays and practices, but is just a complete dick to everyone? Missing shots on purpose, TO'ing the ball, basically forcing the team not to play him or want him, but at the same time not retiring. The team would then ask him to stop coming to practice and games, would he still get paid?

Billups sounds as surly as D-Will. Did not think that was possible. All posturing, but I can total see Gilbert making a 3 Mill bid on Billups to both mentor irving and to be an ***. Billups is getting bid whether he likes it or not. I have always liked him, but after the lockout and all this **** from CP3 and Howard this is one arae an owner can stick it to a player. All Billups did was put a bullseye on his back.

Yeah, I wouldn't doubt if someone picked him up to trade, but I doubt they're going to let him choose where he goes. More likely they'll just try to find some middle ground on choosing a team. No way do I see him going to the Heat, Lakers, Mavs, etc. That's exactly the situation the owners have fought to prevent.

I've been looking for info regarding time restictions and how much salary would count in a trade. It looks like it isn't known yet, but according to Coon, he believes 30 days before a team could trade, and probably the amount of the bid would apply to the trade.

Pretty sure you can't do this. I could be wrong, but I thought a team who acquires an amnesty player cant trade him till July 1. That's why Billups is so testy. He knows that a Toronto can pick him up and his only choice to make 14 million dollars is playing in Toronto.

So his comments might be reaching for the stars that NOBODY will grab him, but they also make sense to prevent a Sacramento or Toronto grabbing him. He might actually be accepting of his dreary fate, but hoping to avoid a cellar dweller.

Well, the 30 day rule would obviously help him immeasurably, although that would only mean plenty of teams will bid (which, as a side note, means he can't double dip for salary.) But it doesn't really serve his agenda to play for a winner since the acquiring team will just deal him for the best package which couldn't possibly be Miami. And on the same tip, that would theoretically make it possible for him to go back to NYC after a month. I have a hard time believing the league is going to allow such a loophole to occur.

That sounds rough. The world is such a cruel place. Really, the only decent thing to do is let him collect his 14 mill on top of another contract so he can play wherever he wants. I think the world owes him this, and anything less would be inhumane.

Making him wait half a season to become a FA, as per his agreement, just seems wrong somehow.

And on the same tip, that would theoretically make it possible for him to go back to NYC after a month. I have a hard time believing the league is going to allow such a loophole to occur.

Yeah, he's playing a losing hand. He might successfully ward off the Toronto's and Sacramento's. Maybe that's his real goal. But he won't not perform. He's savvy enough to realize he can quickly get through the PR of his recent comments, but poisoning a team is not something he will get over very easily. And the teams he wants to play for could have plenty of more desirable options next year if he doesn't play to his ability out of spite.

I'm not defending him. I'm just saying that he knows he's going to make 14 million dollars next year. He'll show up. And I think any team that acquires him knows that. They just won't believe he will actually be a cancer as he says. It's not in his self interest to do that.
