What's new

if you were the agent of a player of a team tanking..

i would assume that an agent would be more worried about the next payday. Although where they play = endorsements.

If I were Alec's agent I'd tell him to try and be the man on every play. To play with wreckless abandon, make fancy difficult passes, and to not play within the offense.

Play defense, play hard, smart shot selection. On the rest you can't really have too much influence. Don't force the action unless you have an edge.

Get better. Assume a leadership role and show you can carry this team to do things no one thinks you can.

Show him the records of PHX and what MCW is doing. Remind him that in 03-04 the Jazz won 50% of their game with nothing more than superior effort and AK got a max deal off it.

Be a man. Take responsibility for yourself and don't use excuses.

yep

Great point, I'm imagining a conversation between Pete Holt, Greg Popovich and Scott Layton are sitting around the table talking about free agent needs for next year…..

Pete: So Greg, what type of player are you looking to sign?
Greg: Well, for one, we really like players who play with reckless abandon. That has to be first. Scott, anything to add?
Scott: I'd agree, but, more importantly, we should pay the big bucks to players who do not play within the offense. Guys who strive for high PPG stats (we look at these really carefully) but when you look more deeply, their team is suffering when they are on the floor (we tend to ignore these stats as trivial)
Pete: Great point, guys, we need players just like that. But you are missing one key ingredient: all free agents you go after need to be able to make many fancy difficult passes. I feel that while fancy difficult passes do not help us win, they make me giggle and we wind up on more "Top 10" lists. That puts fans in the seats, more important than wins and losses!
Greg Popovich: So, we're in agreement. I'll get on the line to Andy Miller, these are the attributes he has been encouraging Alec Burks to develop. Pete, do I have your approval to offer a max deal?
Pete: Yes, but only if he agrees to do more fancy difficult passes as a Spur!!

(yeah, yeah, I know the Spurs are different, but seriously, most management teams have some brains)

I started this thread because I was just thinking that I may advise my player to play strong d, be a good person/leader, but not do too much to risk injury. If you're a shot-blocker, take less risks... save it for a time appropriately prior to an extension or end of contract... much more so than playing for a non-tanking team.

I'm not being an apologist for our lackluster play... just curious about these things.

Kanter's play comes to mind.

Definitely some competing incentives.

This team isn't going to win, and individual excellence is rewarded with fat contracts in the NBA. For players, it may be hard to see why filling a role on the team, and blending in with the ****, is better than trying to separate yourself as an individual. It only takes one GM seeing potential for players to land large contracts.

I feel free agency discussions aren't made based on raw stats any longer as proven through the cases of Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings. And jacking up shots may help your PER but it won't help your win shares. And that's I guess a much more important part of that discussion.

I'd tell future all starts to showcase their strengths and future AlNickYoung Burks to hide their weaknesses. Pretty simple formula they follow.

Seriously besides renting....

Publicly support the coach, it is a great way to show the other 29 GMs that you can be a 'team player'. If worded right your support for the coach it can even come off as a dig against other players that might be playing ahead of you.

For example: " The Coaching staff put together a good game plan we just need to execute it as a unit."

In Utah go out to the mall, buy a fan a hat, dive on the floor for a loose ball and the public will demand that you play.

Learn Italian.

Convert. It will get you another contract but cost you 10%.
