The stats are very revealing and highlight a truth often ignored on this board. There are very few coaches who have an appetite to play rookies unless they get one of the great ones or have no good options. The notion that Sloan and Corbin were unique in wanting to play vets is false. And for many rookies it is not necessarily the best way to develop.

How many years does a player have to be on a roster before he us no longer deemed a rookie and no longer has to "pay his dues" by riding the pine while some washed up vet gets floor time? What it comes down to is Sloan and Corbin were both generally unwilling to sacrifice a few wins early in order to achieve more later in the season (or the year after). Both were EXTREMELY short-sighted.

Sloan played younger players all the damn time. Remember that he was playing for the post season so it was his job to get those rookies and sophomores up to speed for the playoffs, which he did with such mediocre dudes as Russell, Ostertag, and Anderson. Malone played right away even though he had an all star in front of him. Stockton had to wait a year, but Green was an all star as well. A more accurate deduction was that "Sloan refused to give mid round and higher draft picks starting minutes over established veteran starters, including all stars, on playoff teams at the beginning of the year."
