Independent Analysis Demolishes Wells Report

Wow. This really puts Goodell in a tough spot. The Wells Report screwed up the science completely. If he does not vacate the suspension, the courts will:

"The NFL paid millions for a fundamentally flawed report by lawyer Ted Wells that made Brady and the Patriots out to be slam-dunk guilty, based on more than 100 pages of mathematical analysis of ball pressurization . . . that turns out to be erroneous. The AEI’s report totally rejects the finding that the footballs used by the Patriots in the AFC championship game had a significant drop in air pressure compared with those used by the Colts. But the truly damning sentence is this one, buried in its erudite phrasings and equations: “The Wells report’s statistical analysis cannot be replicated by performing the analysis as described in the report,” the AEI concludes.

Basically, the math didn’t add up. It’s a standard principle in science: If you can’t replicate a set of results, then there is a problem with it. A flaw or a fraud is at work. Either you made a mistake, or you made it up.

When the AEI analysts looked more closely at how such a mistake could have been made, what they found “astonished” them, says the report’s co-author Stan Veuger. The Wells report “relies on an unorthodox statistical procedure at odds with the methodology the report describes.” Translation: The Wells report said it would use one equation but then used a different (and weird) equation to arrive at its numbers.

“It was really clumsy,” Veuger says. “It’s the kind of mistake you’d see in freshman statistics class.”

I was hoping this story would never die. If we're lucky this new information can fuel the debate at least through November. I'm a little worried that it might get overshadowed for a while by the '16 Superbowl, but I can imagine several scenarios where it will not. Whew.

I was initially pissed at Brady. Incredibly stupid. From the start, my brother-in-law made me laugh by adopting a "it ain't cheating unless you're caught" refrain. Lol, maintain us against the world at all costs. Eventually, I saw the flaws in the Wells Report and understood how this is the way it would be anyway. It is us against the world, lol. Ya gotta stick by your team. Disappointed to be sure, however. Very disappointed.

But now it's the Commish who pisses me off. I don't care about his image, his legacy. It seems almost a given that Brady could win in court now, if he so chooses. Regardless of what he did/did not do with footballs, the new and correct science tells Brady that "the Commissioner is just fine with railroading you". I would not let him sucker punch me like that. Only if it were in the "best interests of the team" to back down, would I back down. And even then, awfully hard to just let this guy reestablish his image in terms of his legacy as Commisioner by railroading me.

The NFL needs to be very careful here. If they don't get this resolved and it goes to court, there could be an adverse ruling on anti-trust issues that could start the entire house of cards falling. I don't think the commish is that arrogant or stupid, but you never know.

So do we move on to a third research, combine the two, take apart both research teams, or just say "eff this" and watch more basketball?
