Interesting Lakers trade scenario

LA wants LeBron and Melo and are looking to deal the #7 pick along with Steve Nash's expiring $10M deal to free up cap space to offer them each $16M.

On one hand, helping the Lakers get LeBron makes me nauseous. On the other hand, I don't see him taking his talents to Staples Center (a la the house that Kobe built).

For a chance at #7 and additional ammo to move up for Wiggins or Jabari, I am intrigued by this possibility. I wonder if Mitch and DL have traded any phone calls.

I really doubt that he would. My expectation would be that he'd play out his contract. Can't see LeBron or Melo wanting to take on the rebuild in Los Angeles with a broken down Kobe as the only thing of value on that team moving forward. If they really wanted either of those two, then they should have let Bryant's deal expire and then offer him less. The fact that he got the contract that he did pretty much puts them out of the running. How do you justify giving Kobe Bryant $30 million and then ask LeBron James and Carmello Anthony (both younger, more healthy and more productive players at the moment) to take a $10 million or more pay cut just to put together a big 3 with no bench.

They both have much better options in Chicago, Houston, Boston and Miami. Nope. . . don't see either of them ending up in Los Angeles - thank goodness. I've rather enjoyed watching them self destruct over the past 3 years. I'd rather not see them improve in the near future. The Jazz are in a much better situation than the Lakers, we just can't get the free agents that they can.

That was my thought as well. Worth if it gets you LeBron, but for just a chance at LeBron, that's a tough pill to swallow.

With the way the CBA has changed contract lengths and with front offices getting smarter, teams with rentable cap space are going to become somewhat common (the Jazz pioneered pioneered this in this era). Thus driving down what a team renting out that space can reasonably ask for.

But in case I needed to state my position, holy **** yes you rent out your cap space to get the #7 pick of the draft. 365 days a week.

So give them John "Tank Commander" Lucas the 3rd. Because that's pretty much where they're heading. With that contract that they gave Kobe, they're not going to be able to build a solid team until his broken down body forces him to retire. He's just eating up too much cap space and they're not willing to pay the more stringent luxury tax penalties. I can see them go after a couple of younger free agents to build around after Kobe leaves, but I think they're in treadmill mode until they move on from him. He costs too much against the cap and they have no real assets to go get something decent.

Agree... It would likely take Burke and #23 or the GSW 17 pick plus our unguaranteed contracts to get this done. Sixers apparently were willing to go MCW and Thad for #7... they could likely move Thad for unguaranteed deals or just cap space and keep MCW.

Also, I think the Lakers will become the Knicks of the West. They now have an idiot running the team and are making emotional win now type of moves when they should just be rebuilding. Melo and Bron ain't walking through that door. I think we will all enjoy the next few seasons of garbage from the Lakers.

Okay, so maybe you don't know how things work.

-The Jazz have $25 million in cap space that they need to use or they forfeit it for no reason.
-The Jazz aren't luring any high-level players to a traditional free agency dead-zone to a team that just won 26 games. It's just not happening.
-The Jazz effectively lose nothing and gain an extremely valuable asset. The "$10 million" is gone either way.

I'd take Nash + #7. Lakers cannot get both Lebron and Melo, unless they trade Kobe too. I don't think Lebron would want to help Kobe win more championships. They are both chasing Jordan, why would he want to help Kobe get #6 to tie Jordan?
