the point is you cant predict now what teams will have or be willing to give up 8 months from now.
If DL trades Joe Jesus for a second rounder I'd be pissed. It may be time to bump that 'how many games has JJ won for us' thread. Johnson is still a good player on a good contract and he's a great example for our younger guys.

I don't agree. The psychological impact to our young core by not making the playoffs would be damaging in my opinion. It will feed into the the whole depressing narrative (that the entire league and media believes) that the "Jazz go from being a top 5 team in the NBA to being a lottery team because they lost Haywood"
If the Jazz make the playoffs, regardless if it's on the back of JJ, the organization/players proves everyone wrong, and our young players have something encouraging to build on. Confidence is a huge part in the development of a team. I want a guy like Donovan Mitchell experiencing the playoffs in his rookie season, I want to see Exum get some "real" playoff experience with more minutes and responsibilty. I want to see how Rodney Hood responds to being the go to scorer in the playoffs. There is no scenario where NOT making the playoffs is the good for the development of this team.

'hey, this guy is pretty good, let's trade him.' what? it seems whenever a player that isn't our young talent (and sometimes even them) does well, the first thing people say is 'hey, let's trade him to a sucker for someone better'. why not have joe around for the rest of his career? he likes us, we like him, he's good and he's affordable. and he isn't going to stunt anyone's minutes because he's too old to demand major minutes. and in a few years he retires, and whomever he is mentoring takes their place as the new leader. face it guys, we aren't a young team anymore. sure, we have some young players, but they aren't the majority anymore. this team is currently designed to consistently contend for the playoffs, and joe helps with that goal. heywood was good, but he wasn't the main reason we got to the playoffs, it was definitely a team effort, and if players stay uninjured this season, it seems obvious we make it in again, not because of our youth, but because of our seasoned veterans. including joe.

IMO it would take a very good offer for DL to consider trading him. I imagine he values Johnson's leadership & ability to mentor beyond any assets that will likely be offered. And I don't believe he is willing to risk potentially damaging the league's perception of the franchise by trading a respected veteran who chose to be in Utah.
Personally, I believe we should be prioritizing the long-term, but unless the playoffs are completely out of reach by the trade deadline or somebody significantly overpays, I expect Johnson to be a key contributor this season & possibly beyond.

That'll happen the following year. Culture and learning are very important things in development, and I think JJ is going to be a critical piece for providing a lot of both for a team in transition. I think that is much more valuable than the odds you're getting on a 2nd rounder panning out. Additionally, who's paying a 2nd rounder in the 30's? Junk teams who possess them and would just as soon lose?
