Dirk captured the attention of coaches and scouts when he was 18 because he could shoot lights out as well as put the ball on the floor. The rarest combination of skills you can get from a 7-footer. Kanter's 19 and theoretically can do several things well - but doesn't have that one special skill he's great at like Nowitzki was.

Actually Charles Barkley tells a story all the time about when he and Scottie Pippen and a bunch of other NBA players played a game in Europe in the 90's against a Euro team that had a really young Dirk and Dirk completely lit them up. He said he offered Dirk a blank check if he would attend Auburn. This was years before he was drafted.

He was a great shooter with amazing touch for a 7-footer, but when you say "put the ball on the floor" did you mean he dribbled once or twice and got bullied out of the paint like a nerd in a school yard? It took Dirk time and some serious encouragement to develop his post up and dribbling game, which is why he brought in Geschwindner. Dirk would be Memo if he never developed a good interior game, ok a better shooter than Memo, but you get the point.
 
Dirk was way better than Kanter at 19. Way better. Dirk was better at 17-18 than Kanter is now.

The Barkley game referenced above is basically true, but it was not in Europe, it was at the Nike Hoop Summit in San Antonio, TX and Dirk schooled a bunch of NBA hall of famers in that game.
Granted, I doubt the NBA players were playing like it was Game7 of the NBA Finals....but still, they were legit. NBA HOFers while Dirk was basically a unknown high school kid.

Mavs GM Donnie Nelson actually heard about Dirk for the 1st time in history via Barkley.
Barkley was in love with Dirk after that game, desperately wanted him to attend Auburn. Said he could overcome any type of road bloacks via his connections for Dirk.
Dirk chose to forgo college and go straight to the NBA, Donnie took Barkley at his word and took put faith in Dirk (over the more 'safe' pick Paul Pierce at the time) and the rest is history.

At this point in Kanter's career, he will be a success story if he becomes a starting player on a half decent team in the NBA one day.

When I say "put the ball on the floor" I mean that ability coupled with his shooting made him a multi-dimensinal scorer - and that's also a direct quote from one of the first American coaches ever to see Dirk at the age of 18. In December of 1996, Chuck Swenson (a college assistant coach) witnessed a private workout of Dirk by Holger Geschwindner - and said "he did remind me of a Bird-type player because he could shoot the lights out. And he could put the ball on the floor. That's what made him special."

And Dirk didn't bring Holger in just "to develop his post up and dribbling game" - Holger was his shooting coach and worked with him from the time Dirk was 16. In alot of ways, Holger was like Dirk's German version "Maverick Carter" with alot more expertise in shooting the basketball.
 
He's more like Koufos than he is Nowitzki. Bottom Line - I think he will be an OK NBA player that will get drafted way sooner than he should.

thats what i mean, Dirk isnt where he is right now cuz he was just talented, he worked too hard indeed. I dont think Kanter will be anythng near Nowitzki in the means of shooting, but he has more of a post game, if he works hard enough as Nowitzki, he has lots of different skills to improve
 
I think he will be able to emulate Boozer's offensive game and sadly I think he will emulate Boozer's defensive game as well. If he can stay healthy that is a pretty valuable player.

i think Boozers defensive game is unmatched. Noone on this planet can be similar yet
