What's new

is the 2013 draft really that bad

Who were we all so excited about with the 8th pick in this draft anyway? Lillard or Marshall would have been nice, but both a bit of a reach.

^^^^I choose to think this way because it helps with the hurt.
What I choose to believe is that without a pick, KOC will be forced to use the MEMO TPE to pick up a solid player. And the Jazz will have salary flexibility because they'll be getting rid of Miles and not having to pay two more lottery picks.

It won't be as deep, so if we get the 12th pick or lower, it will suck. If we can get something in the top 8-10, I think we can get a good player.

Guys on my radar for next year.

BJ Young
Myck Kabongo
Alex Poythress
Adonis Thomas
LeBryan Nash
Tony Mitchell (For Wes)

Kevin Durant recently said that Kyle Anderson is the best player from the graduating class of 2012. I don't agree with him, but I definitely like Anderson, along with the guys you listed.

Hmm, I just picked from a list that DX had for the mock 2013 draft.

Its weird Brandon Ashley is not on that list. He should be huge for AZ this year. Guess we will have to see, but I am going to remain optimistic. alot of guys with Vegas ties should be drafted next year.

Yeah, I'm not sure why he isn't on their mock.

Im noticing quite a few missing. Most of UCLA's incoming class should be 1st rounders. I loved watching Jordan Adams in AAU. He is a lights out shooter. Maybe PKM can shed some light on why some of these guys are missing, but I am assuming they are just lazy with that list right now.

It is pure speculation regarding how good a particular draft will be but the top 5 rating doesn't matter to the Jazz because there is little chance the Jazz will have a top 5 pick. The GS pick is top 6 protected so there is no way the Jazz will get a top 5 pick unless they take a step back and don't make the playoffs next year. Even with that the Jazz would still have to have great lotto luck.

Personally, I think you can not truly judge a draft until a few years after the draft. Last year draft's was suppose to be below average but it actually turned out pretty good with a lot of depth even though there wasn't a lot of "superstars" in it. The Hayward draft is getting stronger by the year with the improvement of the top players Cousins, Turner, Favors, Monroe, Hayward, George etc.

I’m guessing, for now, we’ll have two first round picks in the mid-teens (14 – 18). As has been discussed ad nauseum, our PG of the future will not likely come from a draft pick (at least not for a few years). However, we do still have a chance to pick up a very good SF in the 2013 draft.
I’ll list the PG’s that are in the range (per DX), but my opinion stands, none of these are our future starting PG.
BPA is always the obvious choice. Having said that, I feel like the best and most relevant fit for the Jazz team (with the personnel in this draft) would be 2 SF’s. We could get a long, athletic, bouncy guy .. as well as a sharp-shooting SF.
Incidentally, almost ALL of our targets would be sophomores or older .. very few one-and-dones in this class.

Through top 25 (PG’s and SF’s)
PG’s
CJ McCollum (12)
Myck Kabongo (15)
Ryan Harrow (21)

SF’s
Quincy Miller (7) – Everyone knows. If not, just ask.
Adonis Thomas (8) – Quick first step. Good at creating his own shot. Very good (not great) outside shooter. Great work ethic/intangibles. He will be high on the Jazz list, I would assume.
CJ Leslie (9) – A tweener. Not comfortable in the post and not a good 3pt shooter makes him a bit of a man without a position. Having said that, he has very impressive length, very good athleticism, and plays with energy. I’ve been on the fence since he was playing on the same HS team as John Wall. I was glad we got TJones over CJ .. but would have been happy with either.
LeBryan Nash (10) – I can’t help but like the kid. He’s the kind I usually don’t like (big scorer, inefficient, more flash than substance ..), but I do somehow find myself really liking him. It’s obvious to anyone watching that he’s the ATHLETE on the floor. Super fun to watch.
Dario Saric (19) – Have never seen him play.
Otto Porter (20) – Hasn’t impressed me a whole lot. Certainly has good upside, but his perimeter shooting has been atrocious.
Wayne Blackshear (23) – I see him as a SG, but DX says SF, so we’ll go for with that. Shot poorly at UL but has a very good looking shot and shot it very well in prep years.
Reggie Bullock (25) – Similar to Blackshear. More of a SG, imo. Great outside shooter. Both he and Blackshear are strong, good defenders, and can shoot.

It’s very early, but I think I could get behind any of these SF’s. I like the idea of taking a long and athletic guy along with a Bullock type that is both strong as a bull and shoots the lights out.

Quincy is declaring ths year right? Saw that he changed his mind this week.

Some kids talk being one-and-done while others do not. The DX list appears to respect what the kids are saying or not saying. Kyle Anderson, for example, I have never heard discuss it, while Shabazz has many, many times. Also, the NBA (those I talk to, that is) does not see Anderson as a "Magic" type PG. They see him as a SF. He's a bit slow (as in not quick) so many are waiting to see him play collegiately before making a lot of assumptions about his game translating to the NBA. For the record, I thin he'll be damn good, but will get burned a lot on defense .. as I've said before, he's like a taller Kendall Marshall.

Also- Dont you think some of these PG could surprise? I did not see lillard in the first round on mocks until a few games into this season.

No doubt whatsoever. Just my personal opinion that an elite starting PG will not emerge.

Lets hope. I think Harris has found his groove. If need be we can run with him for another season.

But I do hope we can create enough room to after Goran and we can use those picks just to help round out the roster with solid role players. Futures bright for the Jazz regardless.

What about BJ Young? He might not be an elite passing pg, but he showed ability to be an elite scorer/shooter as a freshman.

I really like Young (another one that almost ended up at UK, btw). I'd say he has more upside than Kabongo (because of his shooting, length, and explosiveness). Only reason he's not higher on my list, and I suppose the mocks, for that matter, is his being seen as more of a combo guard than a pure PG. I don't see any issues why he can't be more of a true PG (he has good enough skill level), but we haven't seen that cerebral, run the team playmaker .. yet. If I were to name a darkhorse to be a Lillard type player, it would be BJ. Yep, we could use a good BJ.
