Is the NBA Draft Lottery Rigged?

So the lottery rig priority order goes:

1. Keep stars in their hometown
2. Get Cleveland and Minnesota as many 1st as possible
3. Big markets

One more: Is the franchise being sold to a new owner with a lottery pick being thrown in to sweeten the deal? Examples: Pels on the market, get Anthony Davis; Bucks on the market, get Jabari Parker; Hornets on the market, get Brandon Miller; Etc. In this case, the league can leverage a lottery pick to close a successful deal and protect their franchises' valuations.

Also wondering: what was the probability of Cavs winning 3 lotteries in a row from 2012 to 2014?

Also, notice that the Lakers moved up to #2 in the draft three straight times that they were in the lottery: 2015 (D'Angelo Russell), 2016 (Brandon Ingram) and 2017 (Lonzo Ball). The Lakers could have had Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

That makes a bit more sense to me as a higher ticket sale does benefit all owners

I have shared my thoughts on this before, but I just really don't see it. Its fun to **** post and I will write my insane conspiracy theories but only tongue in cheek.

1. The lottery is audited by EY, a multinational organization who operates on trust and legality, and is massively larger than the NBA. They audit ~25% of fortune 500 companies. I just don't see them risking their rep on the NBA which wouldn't even rank in top 50-100 of their clients by size.
2. Sure there are owners who care about economic incentive, but not all of them. Ballmer doesn't give a **** about making money on the Clippers and would throw a fit if he felt another team was getting an advantage he doesn't. You don't screw billionaires.
3. With that said, where is the economic incentive is wasting generational talents like Anthony Davis, LeBron James, Zion Williamson, Andrew Wiggins, Kyrie Irving, etc on the Clevelands and New Orleans of the market world? I know you can write a narrative, but you can do that with really whoever wins.
4. Secrets get out, especially over 40 years. I could see Ewing especially as it was the first draft, but don't see how it could be now.

If Brooklyn wins this year we can say it was the league setting up one of their bigger markets after it cratered. If San Antonio wins we can say the league is rigging for SA again to set up Wemby. If Philly wins people will say the league is bailing them out to find a way with Embiid. If NO wins people will say they're rigging it to set him up with Zion. If Dallas manages to jump up people will have the same narrative that they did for NO after they got Zion after AD left. You can always give reason to chaos in retrospect. I will still bitch and moan like a kid if SA gets Flagg and theorize that SA has deep state influence on Adam Silver and potentially has satanical powers, but I won't actually mean it. Its an entertainment league where we extrapolate single data points like they mean something and give meaning to a player being the first to score exactly 21 pts, 12 rbs, 6 asts while shooting 7/12 in March under a full moon.

He must have read it in a book
Exactly. Or like when he was asked what his favorite movie was and he said the godfather and that he's seen it a bunch and the asked him his favorite scene and he was like "ummm...".

Or when he said he's a great chess player then they asked if he plays chess and he was like "no, but a lot of people tell me I would be awesome".

He is a weirdo in interviews sometimes.

How come the other new owners got hosed though? Plenty of franchises have changed ownership without their lotto gift.
Like Ryan is sitting right there like WTF???? I bought a **** team in Utah and made two other contenders... when do I get my welcome gift?

Because the Jazz weren't in the lottery when Ryan bought the Jazz. It's not a Welcome Gift. It's a deal-sweetner.
lol... these billionaires line up for miles to buy these franchises. They don't need sweetners.

The Lakers, Celtics and Knicks had many horrible seasons lately but last time any of them got the number one picks was 40 years ago. Historically, almost all "generational" NBA prospects went to small market teams with bad records: Shaq, Duncan, LeBron, Howard, Oden, AD, Zion, Wemby... You can put a tin foil hat ob and say: "Oh, the NBA wanted to save struggling franchises!"... But if it was the reason for rigging then you don't have to do it - the random drawing will take care of it as every year there are several hapless small market teams finishing at the bottom.

...and no rigged draft conspiracy thinkers were ever able to explain why the Cavs were "gifted" four number 1 picks in the span of twelve years. Just imagine if it were the Lakers instead...
