What's new

It's pretty sad when....

One of the oldest players on our team (Joe Johnson) has hardly sat out this year at all. Dude is almost a decade older than most of our players and he's still trucking along (I realize injuries are pretty much nobody's fault). Guy has been one of the best pickups in the last decade.

Thanks joe

Joe Johnson is the very definition of a war horse, and he plays a very low-impact style of ball..

Not a fair comparison point for these other players talking about health.. He's performed admirably tho.

Lets hope he's got plenty in the tank for the playoffs.

The coaching staff limits his minutes for a reason and his style of play has changed by design to prolong his career. He never really puts his body in harms way to be injured, at least not nearly as much as other players on our team do.

There's nothing sad at all about the way he is playing. He is a competitor and earns his paycheck. I like the fact he steps up as needed (which is admittedly a lot with the injuries) and sets a standard for the younger players. Also, they talk about his preparation and how he stays in shape to play. That should motivate everyone on the team to prepare and take care of their bodies. It sounds like he is of the Stocton and Malone train of thought when it comes to his training and follow up recovery after the game.

Can't say enough good stuff about Joe. He's been perfectly happy to be a bit player when everyone is healthy and to step up when he's needed. That's a luxury few teams can afford. A 7-time All-Star who can shift his game into a gear that resembles his glory days when the Jazz need him to.

Check out these stats. Joe has been called upon to play 30+ minutes a game 11 times this season. About every 7th game, he's asked to shoulder a load of a man 10 years younger.
In those games, Joe has put up 14.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, and 2.9 APG. He has also shot 51% from the field, 48% from beyond the arc, and 94% from the line in those games. His +/- is +11.6.

Now, you might say this is how it works. Young players(Dante, for example) fall in efficiency as they play more minutes. Jamal Crawford shoots worse if he plays over 30 minutes. Some of the other old guys like Terry and Ginobili either don't improve or get worse the more they play. There are only a few guys like Carter and Dirk who step up when needed like Joe. We're very, very lucky to have him.

Great post. I hope that Joe retires with the Jazz, he's so valuable to our team.

If you look at his splits his performance greatly depends on rest.

He reminds me of some of the guys I play pickup ball that are older... he won't bend over to pick up low passes or mishandled dribbles. Just kinda shrugs his shoulders and says eff it.

I am enjoying JJ a lot. Joe Jesus is a straight tank.

I think Quin has managed JJ's minutes perfectly. Hopefully he ends up being a key piece in the playoffs. Give me a rotation that leans heavily on Hayward, Gobert, JJ and (a healthy, motivated) Hill. . . with solid contributions from Favors, Hood, Jingles, Burks and Neto/Exum. Jazz can compete as long as they don't have to rely on Diaw and Exum as much as they have lately.

JJ also got a pretty good deal. He got to live in a quiet city which he said he likes. He got paid. The spotlights are off of him. He got to do his yoga. He gets to come in 10-15 minutes a night and just do his thing. And now he gets to go to the playoffs - something he hasn't done for a while since being in Brooklyn, etc.

Looks like it had worked out perfectly for all parties.

I'd argue that he plays smartly where other players maybe play a little bit reckless and that leads to more chance of injuries ala Burks.

Not only that, but the fans all love him and dont feel like he's overpaid. Good deal for both sides. Hopefully they can get someone comparable to him to come next year too.

Both joez on our team know their strengths and are smart and confident
