What's new

It's Summer Time!!!

and what is a dutch oven anyhow, and what does it have to do with summer?

BBQ marinades I can understand, but a Dutch oven?

usually I think of Dutch ovens as big, heavy covered pots used more in the winter to cook stew or soup - stuff that takes a long time to cook

Dutch oven cooking is weirdly popular in utah. Yeah, you take that same heavy pot out camping, dig a pit, build a fire in it, put the dutch oven full of food in the pit and cover it all with coals and dirt. Yay, we have cooked potatoes in the middle of the wilderness! Best thing evah!

[COLOR="#rancidskunkcarcass"]Who gives a flying rats corn-hole about dutchoven cooking?

People who don't like oatmeal or dog food every meal.

It's not really Dutch.

It's the West's supercharged bad *** version of the crockpot or the pressure cooker.

It makes all food taste better.

It's weird. It's magical.

Throw stuff in an cast iron pot.

Slow cook it with coals.

Mind=Blown with every bite.

Believe in pixies and fairy dust.

It's the only thing that explains the taste.

I'd hire a dutch oven cook over a lawn manicuring crew every day of the week.

It's that good.

Thanks guys!!! I don't camp, so the dutch oven I have is only used on the stove. I never really thought of it as a special genre of cooking, but it's making me hungry.

You watch your damn dirty mouth! Dutch oven potatoes are delicious! But I do not thinkt hey have to be cooked while cmaping. Anytime will do.

I'm going to try and go to as many small town celebrations as I can this year. I don't know how many there actually are to choose from, but so far I've got:

Welsh days in Wells, Utah. That's coming up this weekend. I think I'm going to regret that one though as when you google image search "Wells, Utah" nothing but dirt shows up. But I'll just go exploring if it sucks.

Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork around the 24th of July is always cool to dress up like a cowboy and act like an idiot.

Swiss Days at the end of August in Midway. Haven't been to that since I was a kid.

Hopefully I can add a few more, but those are the ones I'm for sure going to.

You missed Summerfest in Logan.

At the tender age of 14, a scout leader tried to make spaghetti out of a dutch oven, and a big pot for pasta just laid on top. Horrible idea. Eddie Spaghetti was his name after that.

Breakfast: Bacon, Potato, Sausage, Egg, Cheese. Cook bacon first, and cut it up into chunks. Remove. Add eggs and some oil, and scramble, but do not over cook. Remove. Throw the remaining ingredients, and some salt and pepper in. Cook for 5 minutes, add the Bacon/Egg back and mix it up. Throw cheese over the top, and cook for another 10 minutes. Eat it plain, or throw it in tortillas for breakfast burritos for an on the go approach.

Dinner: Stew ranks in not only as my favorite, but hardest to mess up. Meat, Carrots, Onion, Celery, Potato. Add some sort of seasoning (sliding scale - Easy = Cream of XXXXXX soup, medium= Thyme, Oregano, Marjoram medley, Hard = Red wine balsamic reduction made pre-camp) and cook until it's all tender and happy. I will mention enchilada casserole as a distant second.

Desert: Hard to argue with Peach Cobbler. But I did enjoy black forest cobbler quite a bit too. One year I was made some sort of cookie monster desert where they had a rolle of cookie dough, flattened it out on the bottom of the oven, and then covered it in some sort of fruit topping(maybe just jam). I had my reservations, but then they put ice cream on it. I found it to be fantastic. If anyone knows what the hell I'm mentioning here, please share the recipe.

Also: not sure what happened to the site, but scoutorama.com is back up, and appears to be kicking. Back in 96 or so, my scout leader owned the domain. He might still be running the show, I have no idea. But there's a large camping/dutch oven recipe section:
