Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 20 - All Tricks No Treats

I just don't understand how starting Sexton will hurt his value as a 6th man. If Sexton struggles as a starter, you can fall back and say he's playing in a role that's too big for him. If he plays great, you all still think he can be good in a smaller minutes role. You can believe 100% that Sexton is a 6th man and will never be something more.....It still makes more sense to give him a bigger role.

The only benefit you get from playing Sexton 24 is that you're getting 8 more minutes of Mills and theoretically tank better. But if tanking is your goal, you can play him less games or trade him and have him play zero minutes.

Moving Collin to the bench was just such a weird move given the performances thus far. I get it if we had like a Tyus Jones that would maybe get other guys going or something but to swap JC in was just a real head scratcher. I don't think Hardy is stupid so I wonder if there is info we are missing. Or maybe he just a weirdo.

For me this goes all the way back to the beginning of last season. Collin is frustrating in certain ways and I don't blame anyone for being a non believe, especially a coach. But the guys Hardy has strong preference for are Key, Clarkson, and before that THT. We can pick apart their differences but they are mostly of the same flavor of frustration. They play dumb, selfish, lose focus, and don't defend.

I listened to most of it.

When it comes to Collin I agree he would be a great 6th man on a playoff team such as Boston or Dallas. Unfortunately the Jazz do not have 5 good starters. Keyonte is the golden boy so I guess they are going to move heaven and earth to make him look good. Ironically Key might only top out as a 6th man himself but they really don't have much else at this point to market to the fans out of the last 2 drafts.

Unfortunately for Collin I don't see any team ever handing him the keys. Brunson was a special case with his Father already on the payroll for the Knicks. Unfortunately for the Jazz I don't see them getting a good return for Collin. It's a combination of him being a small scoring guard and the market for that type of player is real limited. It almost seems half the league is tanking for the next draft so they won't be trying to improve or give up assets to do so. The playoff teams that could use Collin's scoring just don't have great assets to trade. Ainge has to win all his trades so maybe it's an ego thing that he can't pull the trigger on a Sexton deal when he knows he's giving up a productive, youngish player for pennies on the dollar. Ainge probably doesn't want to watch Collin scoring an efficient 18 PPG for the Mavs off their bench during the WC Finals while not even getting a prime asset in return for him.
Good post. I don’t think Boston would play Sexton even as a sixth man, though.

I think the advantages Collin can create are more important than JC being a better passer… I also don’t think he’s a better passer. If it’s about trade value both guys are in the same boat as sixth men. Collin is just better so I do think it’s weird.
I know some people hate stats but last season Sexton averaged 6.6 assist per game per 36. Clarkson has been in the league for 12 years. His career high assists per game per 36 is 5.9. FWIW

Yeah, I think if we made Sexton the main PG and fashioned the offense around him, that would be true.

But that doesnt seem to be what the Jazz want to do or really have any interest in.
