Thriller, obviously you seem to have some inside info. Just how reliable that info is, only you would know, but here's a timeline that all of us outsiders got to see during Heaps time in Provo:
-Heaps commits to BYU and brings Ross Apo with him. BYU fans rejoice. Most point at this signing as a jumping off point in an effort to return to glory.
-Heaps competes with Nelson in fall camp. Bronco can't decide. The season approaches. Bronco still can't decide. The season starts. Bronco goes with both of them so he doesn't have to decide.
-Nelson gets knocked out for the season in Week 3, thus making the QB decision is for Bronco.
-Heaps starts the final 10 games of his Freshman year and gets progessively better.
-Heaps caps the year with a 4TD performance against UTEP, is bowl MVP, and is the first true freshman QB in BYU history to ever win a bowl game.
-The offseason hits, and despite Heaps progression, Bronco decides to run off Rober Anae, promote Doman to OC and then brings in a brand new WR and RB coaches (all 3 of which were probably a bit underqualified at this point IMO).
-Heaps sophmore season starts. BYU offense struggles to gel on all points. Running game is horrid, O-line plays like hell, WR's look awful, Heaps struggles right along with everybody else, Doman is on the field when he needs to be up in the box. This is also during BYU's toughest stretch on their schedule.
-Heaps struggles against Utah State, Riley comes in and saves the day.
-Riley is named the starter right as the schedule starts to soften. Leads BYU to some wins while playing decently, then gets injured.
-Heaps comes in for the injured Nelson, looks as good as he has all season, keeps the BYU offense going and plays about as good as Nelson was playing against similar competition.
-Nelson comes back for Hawaii game, Heaps is benched, Heaps leaves the school.
Now, maybe Heaps does have some work ethic/attitude problems, etc, but I think alot of this falls on BYU's shoulders and especially Bronco Mendenhall's. I think Bronco was really afraid of losing Doman to another school so he panicked a bit and ran off Anae so he could promote/keep Doman. Then the combo of Bronco and Doman brought in a couple of position coaches who are probably im a bit over their head. Considering the circumstances, it was no suprise that BYU's offense was in shambles early. I think at this point it's honeslty fair to consider whether or not BYU has a QB guru on staff who can take a 5-star blue chipper and foster his develpment.
Obviously Heaps is going to wind up somewhere with a chance to play and if he is that lazy and that much of an attitude problem then it will show itself all over again. However, if a guy like Jeff Tedford gets ahold of him and Heaps starts playing great football, it's going to make BYU look like hell.
