Game Thread Jan 25, 2025 06:00PM MT: Utah Jazz @ Memphis Grizzlies

Added to Calendar: 01-25-25

We stayed close in a game against OKC and people were convinced we were a 40 win team again lol.

This team is a clown show. Unskilled goons, trigger happy 9th men, entitled former HS "stars" playing no defense and I don't know WTH Markkanen is right now.

Add a #1 pick and this group is still going absolutely nowhere. The future is pretty ****ing bleak.

I chalk this game mostly up to missed shots. Played well in the first half. Just hard to play good defense when you cant hit anything.

Keyonte's bad 3pt shooting nights dont really bother me. I 100% believe he's going to figure the 3pt shooting out and be a dangerous shooter, but the paint finishing is what I'm not sure on.

Harkless continues to be a beast and he's honestly one of the players I'm higher on moving forward. I think he can our Keon Ellis. When was the last time the Jazz had an elite steals player? Those two years of Rubio? Before that Ronnie Brewer/AK/Stockton? It's always seemed like the Jazz have been near the bottom when it comes to players who really excel at getting steals. The dude has a 2.1 DBPM so far, and that's special considering he's a rookie (yes, an old rookie, but a rookie nonetheless)

I missed the game but I'm very curious what this is. Is that an especially stinky fart on the court?
Before the play there was a little mixup with Morant/Keyonte that Eubanks was involved in and either the next play, or a play or two after, he charged Edey in a non-basketball play with his shoulder. Edey didnt move at all because he's massive, but it was definitely a full force shoulder charge. I think it was the right call personally, but it looked soft considering Edey didnt even move from the impact.

40 win team when playing all your dudes and trying to win is different than a team consistently beating the best teams in the league on the road while not playing your best players and not trying to win imo.

Like I don't know how good this team would be if we were really trying to win but I wouldn't expect many wins against the very best teams in the league no matter what with this roster. I would assume that most of our wins would come from teams less good than the Grizzlies.

We've been horrible all year no matter who is in the lineup. Any time there is a semblance of playing well for like 1-2 games people say "wow we're really good" again. It's funny.

This game would be heading forwards toe to toe, unless Lauri would be having AGAIN horrible shooting night. Wit the probable tank reasons of sitting out games here and there the rest of the season, I'd suspect he'll never get going for longer period as he's a rhythm shooter. He might end up having career low 3pt percentage, and as his inside play is sub par, He has a LOT to think next summer. When the season was younger, you could shrug off it as "oh he'll be great again with a better team around him", but I only hope if it was only that. I don't think in a long term his shooting will be a problem, but I'm actually very worried of how useless he's been inside the arc. I never think a second, he's going to be able to do anything with the ball this season. It looks that either his confidence or motivation is rock bottom, and you can only hope it's getting back after the Jazz has done with their tanking after next season.

But hey, it's good for the tank. ""
Lauri settled for difficult 3pt shots all night. Why the hell does every three he jacks up have to be tightly contested, why can’t he throw a pump fake drive in, that at least gets guys to back off a bit or get him to the line, or free someone else for an easy assist. His play was lazy and showed low IQ

It was a basketball play, he was going in for a rebound.

I disagree. Can you post some box scores of games where sexton, Kessler, Lauri, and Collins all play over 30 minutes and we get blown out? Are there a bunch of them to point to? Im not sure but I bet the answer is no.

Kessler really struggled playing against Edey in the first two quarters: his first rebound came with 6 minutes remaining in the Q2 and his offense was also non-existent (scored 2 points). Then Edey is subbed out and Kessler in the next 3 minutes before he sat got 4 rebounds, 4 points, 1 block and 1 assist. The same was more or less true for the rest of the game.

We all love Walter and his improvement this year but his dominant games often come against teams without a quality large center where Kessler simply dominates with his size. Walter struggles against bigger and longer guys because he simply does not have enough moves and fluidity. Hopefully these improvements will come next because otherwise he will be seriously limited in the playoffs going against someone like Porzingis, Davis, Edey, Zubac, or Clingan.

Hard to find any games where our 4 best players all play 30+ minutes but going game by game I found:
A game versus the Knicks
Sexton played 38 minutes, Kessler played 35, Lauri played 33 minutes and Collins played 32 minutes.
Final score: jazz 121. Knicks 106.
Lauri had 34 points and 9 boards
Collins had 20 and 13
Kessler has 11 and 10 and 3 blocks
Sexton had 25 points on 9-14 shooting.

When all 4 of those guys play big minutes the jazz can beat a lot of teams. They are still way worse than Memphis and Boston and OKC etc but I figure if those guys are healthy, getting big minutes, and the jazz are trying to win then they would be as good as Sacramento/San Antonio type teams who are both on place for about 40 wins.

Walter struggles against bigger and longer guys because he simply does not have enough moves and fluidity.

Edey is like kryptonite for Kessler because he's a massive body (even bigger than Walker) who just sits under the rim. That makes him an extremely one-dimensional defender overall, but he happens to occupy the only piece of real estate Walker can function in offensively.

Kessler's continuing inability to shoot really bites him in the *** against guys like Edey.

Always you moving the goalposts and asking others to do homework. We suck when all those guys play. We are 5-13. We would have more wins than we do if we tried to win, but we are not this 40 win team that always gets brought up the instant we play decent for one game. Show me the evidence of us being a 40 win team, you won't because you only ask others to do homework.

If these one off games matter where we play decent, than those single games where we absolute suck also matter the same amount. Truth is, that is horrible way to analyze anything and is the definition of being reactionary. We have 10 wins total. Of course we could have won more, but when you have 10 wins you simply suck no matter how hard you tried. It's hilarious to claim that we are actually a good team whenever we happen to play well and ignore everything else.

Good team? Talk about moving the goal posts.
Middling team. ( I don't consider 40 win non playoff teams as good)

I think that tanking hard and resting guys who are healthy and limiting minutes and having Kessler, Collins and Lauri miss games from injury makes a big difference rather than a little one in regards to wins and losses but that is where we will just have to agree to disagree.

Ah, so a flagrant foul. I was very curious what a fragrant foul was.
