Hey Jay, What type of player do you see Derrick Favors becoming?

Jay Bilas (3:11 PM)

He could be a junior, or lesser, version of Dwight Howard. But, he needs to play harder and with more focus and passion. Favors is very good, but he is not a finished product yet. I saw him hang 44 points and 22 rebounds on Terrelle Pryor in HS. Great performance.

I actually disagree with this prediction. Favors isn't a true center, so it's not an apples to apples comparison. I'm not under the illusion that Favors will be as dominate on rebounding and defense as Howard, but I think he has a MUCH better chance to be a better offensive force than Howard.

I understand why he's trying to compare the two, but I don't think that's the way to go. Favors will have his own style, and that will be the potential to be the ultimate PF.

You realize their difference in size in one inch of standing reach. There is almost no difference in their athletic measurables. With better experience (not getting into foul trouble) and awareness there is no reason why Favors couldn't have a similar impact defensively and on the boards.

Offensively of course they are very, very different.

I'm not saying he couldn't get close defensively, but Dwight plays bigger than Favors and I doubt he'll match or surpass Howard. Even in Howard's rookie year, you couldn't push him from his position. Favors can somewhat disappear when rebounds are up for grabs when compared.

Right now, Favors plays more like a PF than a C, that's my point. Besides, I'd rather Favors play the 4 as it fits his strengths better. Favors needs to be Favors, not Howard.

But, he needs to play harder and with more focus and passion.

This is the key phrase. Whether he is Amare, or Dwight doesn't matter. He CAN be that good. He needs to work to be that good. That will be whether we have a shot at a title or not.

Can you imagine what Favors would grow into if he can develop Karl Malone's work ethic? In my opinion he would be a top 5 player in the NBA. No "light" required.

The only thing keeping Favors from being elite is confidence and experience. Once he understands how good he can be than watch out. I really think he will be a better offensive player than Dwight because of one thing, his jump shot.

I've heard him compared to Amare, Jermaine O'neal (pre-injuries), Anontio McDyse (pre-injury), and now Dwight Howard.

I hope he can make a name for himself quickly.

Favors has already shown a small ability to hit the midrange jumper. Dwight Howard never did that. I see Favors as a bigger, strong yet less explosive Amare.

Confidence is a big part, IMO. As a #3 pick, he hardly played in NJ. I know he was raw, but NJ knew that when he was drafted. I like how Utah handled him after the draft. He started to get more mins towards the end. And we all saw flashes of how good he can become. Maybe it's not next season, maybe it wll take two. But he's going to have a breakout year. And it's going to be fun to watch.

The season mix posted on JazzFanz pretty much has 20-30 shots by Favors and they were mostly different shots. That was what stood out to me. He is so not one-dimensional. I think his overall game will be great.
