Jazz expected to pursue Andre Iguodala

We can only afford to give him more than the MLE if we lose both Hayward and Hill, at which point it defeats the purpose. Thanks but no thanks.

If by "pursue" they mean we're going to call his agent, and ask "Will he take the MLE?" then yeah, they'll pursue him.

I pitched this a few weeks ago and a few laughed at me: https://jazzfanz.com/showthread.php?69002-New-Idea-Sign-Iguodala-in-Free-Agency

To repeat what I had said -

#1 GS really takes a big hit in their defensive flexibility if they lose Iguodala.

#2 He fits really well next to Gobert. He's athletic, can shoot the 3, and can defend anybody.

$20 is really steep, but I would pay him $15 per year if we can turn Favors into value elsewhere. If we want to contend with GS, we have to steal from them and be able to address them with more versatile defending.

Agreed. I think I would consider going as high as 3/50 for him. Max. But we'd have to not only opt out of Diaw and dump Burks, but also likely trade Favors. And even then, I'm not sure we'd have the room.

I would be really tight for sure. I think it all comes down to what we do with our assets. I list them here:

Favors
#24
#30
Diaw's expiring
Hood
Maybe our 2018 pick (we shouldn't trade the OKC 2018 because it's borderline lottery)

I think those are our most expendable assets. If we can turn some of those into the right asset, then we would potentially renounce guys holding our cap. A guy like Iguodala helps us much more than Ingles and much more than Favors in my opinion. And I would even say more than Hill but that's close.

Let's just say hypothetically we do the following:

We trade Hood, Favors and a pick for Kevin Love (our assets go to Cleveland so they get George).
Then Hayward leaves because I think he's leaving anyway (if I was a betting man).
Without Hayward's cap hold, you let Hill leave which he probably will to get more money anyway. Less cap hold...
We sign Iguodala and a guy like Collison or another good but not great PG. You hope and pray that one of our draft picks, DLeague scouring, etc. gets us a decent wing.

Exum, Collison, Neto
Burks, draft pick/DLeague find
Iguodala
Love, Lyles, Bolomboy
Gobert

In a perfect world, we keep Hood to add to that team. However, we probably can't get Love without Hood. And without Love or Hayward, why does Iguodala come here?

In my personal opinion, Golden State is unbeatable if they keep Curry, Durant, Klay, Draymond AND Iggy. If they lose Iggy, who plays that 5th spot in crunch time? McCall? Zaza? David West? That 5th spot is a major liability which Iggy has covered.

Yeah, but you seem convinced Utah should tank if they lose Hayward and Hill. I think you're going to be disappointed. They aren't going to do that to Rudy just one year after he finally got into the playoffs. They will give it a year or two at least before giving in to another full rebuild.

20 million for a guy who hasn't averaged ten points per game since 2013 and is 33? No, thanks. The guy gets 11 million now. 11 million is fair.

Sure. And we will fail miserably while wasting assets, years and half of Rudy's contract until we realize it's impossible to be contender with 35 year old Iggy(or 31 year old Gallo, or whoever realistic FA you manage to attract) as your offensive star. This will be devastating. And then you will need to trade Rudy, because going into rebuild with Rudy being 2 years away from free agency is a non-starter. That's why I want at the very least to do it right away... pull the band-aid quickly, so you'd have the time to start building a contender before you would have to trade Rudy.

I'm not certain on the rules of S*T, but I guess an outside possibility could be Utah/GSW coming to an agreement where Utah trades Diaw's contract to absorb Iggy at a certain amount? Is that possible? Utah would probably have to throw in the 30th pick, or some future 1st rounder.

You might be right, but you'd also trade Rudy, which I think would be a huge mistake. Utah had a chance for a quick rebuild during the lockout year, and completely blew it. However, it's pretty rare to rebuild quickly with a total teardown, and I don't see the opportunity right now that would be a sure thing. A total teardown could turn into a 5-6 year rebuild or longer.

I was extremely vocal about rebuilding back when KOC blew it the year before we drafted Trey burke, but I don't see that obvious choice here like you do. Losing Hill and Hayward will hurt, but I think we might still be able to put together a team that could win a first round series, and regardless of what we do, we're not likely winning it all anyway, so I don't think making the playoffs again with a chance to get to the 2nd round is a waste.

If you look at it that way, everybody might as well tear it down and rebuild to compete after the Warriors/Cavs domination runs out.
