My friend pointed out to me that Jazz have one great advantage when it comes to deciding what to do with George Hill.

The Jazz know how much he is asking for right now. We don't know. Other teams don't know, but Dennis Lindsey has a pretty dang good idea. At some point when the extension talks failed they had to get a range of what he was expecting. And it had to be significant for the Jazz not to take care of it.

My guess is that we make a move before free agency to take care of the situation for the sake of resigning Hayward. I don't know of anything particularly great we can do, but I guess we do something.

My suspicion is George Hill really wants to get around 28 million a year or more. I think he can get something like that in Brooklyn or Philadelphia but not here. And based on the way he talked in exit interviews, he will take an offer like that.

If he leaves for one of those teams, all I can say to those teams is have fun paying a guy a million per win.

if we are close(we're offering 15 million he wants 20 million) I think we could close that gap. Otherwise the Jazz may already be looking to move on.

So who you signing an trading for? You need a contender that needs a top flight point guard. Guess what pretty much everyone has one. Boston got Ish, Washington got Wall, Toronto got Lowry.

Where you goin for assets an what exactly?

Damn, $28m is pretty damn steep.

Especially for a 31 year old point guard who's starting to have foot/toe injuries. With all the mileage I don't know if I'd pull the trigger. I mean look at DWill for example when Brooklyn signed him to that contract - was he ever the same again?

Tough call.

I guess I don't know. Maybe if there is no obvious replacement you resign yourself to the fact that you are going to resign hill for a lot. I don't love it, but it may be the best we can do.

I'm sure other teams know what he is asking for. Agents talk to GMs.

Okay, for someone not in the loop on me I need this explained to me.

I thought players/agents couldn't talk to teams until July 1. It wasn't clear to me if the original team could before then. Maybe this is one of those rules that no one follows.

The only was I do it is if there is no one else available and it's instrumental to signing Hayward. If Hayward indicates to us he is gone then I say goodbye to Hill. I am not paying George 25 million+ to win 40 games.

San Antonio has money to burn and needs a PG. I'd put my money on Hill in SA or Philadelphia. If Embiid ever gets healthy, paired with Hill, they are a playoff team.

just let Hill go and replace him with Exum in the starting lineup.
It would not make much difference. In 2 or 3 years Exum will be A better player than Hill anyway.

If by not much difference, you mean a ****load of difference, then sure.

As for the OP, all Utah knows is that Hill believed he could get more money than what we offered him, which as far as I know was the maximum amount he could extend for.

And in truth, we don't even really know that. It's very possible that Hill just didn't want to commit without knowing for sure what Hayward was going to do.

So really, the only thing anybody knows for sure is that he wanted to keep his options open.

It's more than pretty damn steep it's ****ing ridiculous.

I doubt there are any secrets about what Hill and his agent want so I see no advantage for the Jazz but I do agree that the Jazz already know what they want with regard to signing him and how much they will pay. I am in the camp that if they can make a splash via trade before free agency starts they will gladly let George walk. I don't think they have given up on Dante like many on this board have. If for some reason George comes back it will have to be at a discount.

All the GMs know what he is asking for, Jazz have no advantage. It is known that we offered him what we could as an extension and he said no.

Knowledge of how much he is asking for is worthless. The uncertainty is in how much other teams are willing to offer him and this will set his market value. Best guess is that Hill and his agent are either (a) misreading his value (near max); or (b) bluffing that they have a suitor willing to pay near-max to up his value. I think Hill winds up with something close to the Jazz extension offer.

If they max him out it will be like AK-47's contract around the Jazz neck.

7.5% raises over his current salary. However, the Jazz never entered extend negotiations. They entered re-negotiate and extend negotiations under the new CBA rule that now allows this under certain stipulations (that benefit the employee). The Jazz could have offered him $28.2mm from last season with 7.5% raises for 4 years. Utah could have paid him an extra $20 million last season and attempted to amortize that bonus over the next 3 seasons with 7.5% declines each season. Or, more likely from the Jazz side, they tried to give him a huge raise but came in at a much lower offer than the max that was something much closer to $20 mill per year.

Unfortunately for Hill, his age and injury history have probably cost him and the Jazz a fair deal locked in.
