true. I never pay attention to the roster at the start of the season but this year we have so many new players it is different. But that is right that most people wont work for free. Not sure how that all goes.

They get paid for their time in camp. The fringe guys want and NEED exposure. So maybe they don't make an NBA team; there's the D-League, Europe, China, etc. In every sport you bring a lot more players into camp than make the roster. In football, 85 gets cut to 53. In baseball, I think you have an active roster of about 40 that gets cut down to 25. I'm not sure if there is a max in basketball for camp. Kenwood or one of the other experts would need to weigh in. But it seems like the Jazz bring in around 18 every year and prefer to carry about 14 on the final roster (KOC likes to keep a spot open in case of injuries or 2-for-1 trades).

If you only brought in 14, you'd miss out on guys like Matthews who come out of nowhere. Maybe it's a lot less evident in Utah as the Jazz roster is usually pretty set going into camp. But other teams have a lot of competition for the last 3,4 or 5 spots.
