The Jazz are still considering adding a player development coach, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.
Utah coach Tyrone Corbin is currently backed by assistants Sidney Lowe, Scott Layden and Jeff Hornacek.
Corbin has often said he's open to adding a big-man coach that could aid the development of second-year forward Derrick Favors. Meanwhile, rookie Enes Kanter would especially benefit from an experienced coach who could push him during practices, building up his game and strengthening his confidence.
The timing of the hire initially hinged upon the NBA lockout ending. Now that the work stoppage is close to being over and training camp could start Dec. 9 for a compressed 66-game season, the Jazz are still interested in adding a fifth coach.
However, the official schedule has not been released, and Utah wants to first examine the four-month regular-season calendar — specifically the amount of available practice and off days versus back-to-backs — before moving on the hire. Ideal candidates will also have to be on the market and available to take the job on short notice.

Please hire Karl Malone.

Karl Malone to work with the plethora of bigs would be amazing.

More than a player development coach they need a defensive specialist coach.

What about Mark Eaton? He could show them how to.... um... block shots and be tall.
Greg Ostertag can show the bigs how to fall correctly when slapped.
Thurl Bailey wouldn't be a bad choice, or the Big Dawg if he's still around.

The trick is getting someone that was good and can be respected, as well as someone that has the ability to teach it.
That might be what Corbin would be most worried about, the ability to teach the skills to the bigs?
Just a thought, but I have no idea. Karl could be great.

Malone would be interesting. Just because you are a great player doesn't mean you are automatically a good coach though.

Not sure Malone would help much at the C position. Good point about the player vs coach thing.
Shaq in Utah? I doubt it...
I'm still holding out for Moses Malone. He actually worked with Hakeem Olajuwon on his post moves early in his career...

Karl's basically begged to be a coach, saying he'd work for free. Given his extreme willingness to coach and the fact that we haven't hired him yet, tells me that management must not want him.

This is my gut feeling about it, too. Karl would be a great development coach, but his strong opinions and direct jabs probably wouldn't be so good for our young staff and players. Then again, maybe it's exactly what they need. Someone to call them out when they aren't pulling their weight? If Karl could be agenda free and do this then I don't see a problem. I just worry that Karl might want to be head coach and could undermine Corbin.

Perhaps if we get Karl to promise he won't? ;) lol

I don't care if he can coach, Karl is quotable. No offense to coach Corbin or his staff but none of them has 'it', Karl does. Professional Basketball is entertainment and Karl is entertaining. while they are at it they can hire Gordon Chiesa to represent the Jazz front office on all radio broadcasts and public appearances and to help with player personality development.

I think he would be a good big man coach. They wouldn't necessarily like him, but they would grow to respect him after a translator translates what he is saying to them.

A little anti climatic wasn't it? Well I think that KM would be a great person to teach the younger players on our roster how to focus on and maintain good gym habits. He would also be a big body for Kanter and Favors to try and push around to gain additional strength and speed if they could get around him.
