Jazz to sell 2nd round pick?

The article mentions cap holds. NBA rules dictate 12 players be cap holds to a team. New York currently has 5. With the two pics, the number is 7. This means there would be 5 cap holds for phantom players that count against the cap. The feeling is that New York may buy a few picks to fill the phantom players with real players that count the same against the cap (2nd round picks). Gives New York a look at players before free agency.
 
The Jazz could go after an undrafted free agent ala Wes Matthews or there's an entire league of players that would die for the opportunity. The UFA or the DLeaguers would probably be as good a prospect.
 
Second-rounders do NOT have guaranteed contracts. IF a late 2nd-rounder makes the team, he'll do so on the cheap, certainly MUCH cheaper than a veteran FA. So there are no financial incentives for the Jazz to sell the pick, other than IF a team sees a guy they really like drop to #55, fear he'll be drafted and offer $ for the pick.

I guess if the Jazz bring back EVERYONE, including Boozer, Korver, Gaines and Jeffers AND add their #9 pick, then they may not want to pay a 2nd-rounder. In that case, why not just draft a Euro? That was the plan w/ Suton. They were thinking Goran would attend summer camp, then sign a contract to play in Europe.

On 2nd thought, I bet Miller jumps at the chance. He traded away Maynor, Harpring's expiring and Ronnie B. for $. Why not sell the pick?

If there's a guy the Jazz like, why not just sell the pick and hope he doesn't get drafted and then bring him in as a UFA? Only would have to sweat out 6 total picks.

Because then you're competing with 29 other teams to sign that undrafted FA. How many would choose Utah as their preferred destination?

Utah got lucky with Matthews. Jazz should have drafted him over Suton if they liked him that much so they would be assured of having his rights.

Well, Glass, if when the second the draft ends all 30 teams start chasin after "pick 61," and all, I wonder why they don't have three rounds, eh? The NBA used to have sumthin like 8-10 rounds, but they quit for some damn reason. Since very few low second-rounders ever work, chances are that third-rounders would have to be more better.
