Whiteside definitely needs to get stronger but I like that he is looking to challenge shots and get rebounds. I'm not sure he's worthy of the 9th pick but if they were to trade back in later or trade the 9th for a later pick Whiteside could be a really good defensive player in the league.

I was talking about the play at 5:50 on the youtube clip. In that play, Whiteside played solid position defense, Ed Davis turned and faded and Whiteside got a piece of it. But yeah, he blocked Ed Davis deep in the lane on that other play earlier in the clip too.

Whiteside patrols the paint on defense. He uses his length to distance himself from the guy he's guarding and cut off driving angles. He doesn't need to get right up on his man because he can react to the play and block the shot.

At 5:50, Whiteside leaves Davis to block the shot of somebody else. No one turned and faded. It was a pick and roll. It was a good block.

All i can say is that every year KOC and Sloan have talked about "getting longer," getting someone that can block shots. Sure Hassan is a bit thin. He's 20 years old! He'll put on some weight. And with his incredible wing span, he can get beat and still block the shot from behind.

I've watched his interview with the Jazz a couple of times. Honestly, I don't know what the fuss is about. He was disappointed that he played poorly. Hey, I remember the time I screwed up a job interview with a recruiter when I was at college. I can just imagine how I would have sounded if someone stuck a microphone in front of me right after.

So, Hassan is finding the transition tougher than he thought. That's to be expected. He said a couple of times he just wnats to work hard to improve and that defense is what sets him apart from the other big guys. Wow! Should he have said he wants to come in, score 20/per and be ROY? I voted for Babbitt in this poll, but I'm voting for Hassan from here on out.
