What's new

Jonathan Simmons

I think Hood will start at SF and the SG starter is up for grabs. Ex, Burks, and maybe even DM. I hope Jingles comes off the bench and add me to the list of those that think we paid too much for him. Still not seeing it. The only reason why we paid what we did is because of GH. I really like Jingles and a lot of what he does but I hope we have a better starter.

Diaw is an asset that expires in a few days. HAYWARD said he would make his decision on a certain day. Completely different.

The Jazz waived Diaw two days early for one of two reasons:

#1 - we wanted the money to make a run at a free agent
#2 - we are staying put

If there was a trade possibility out there, it is illogical to dump a valuable trade asset like a non-guaranteed. You wait until the deadline and waive.

The last sentence is actually the reason they waived him. No trade possibility out there.

I thought Jingles showed over the 2nd half of the season that he had the chops to be a quality NBA starter. I expect him to get first shot at the job.

Gobert, Favors, Jingles, Hood and Rubio will get first crack at it.

Udoh, Jerebko, Joe Jesus, Sefalosha, Mitchell, Burks, Exum and Neto will round out the best bench in the league. Bradley, Bolomboy, Wallace and one more will play for the Stars.

Not really. Its still delaying an obvious decision that waste the other party's time.

Yep, I'm sure they have been searching for weeks for one. Its obvious it's not going to happen with so many other team who just ended up waiving players. So just have some decency and waive the dude, let him move on.

Ingles 1000% starting

Nah, this is just a hunch. If we want to make our team better, we add him.

You have to admit - waiving Diaw two days before his deadline AND a few hours after Simmons became an unrestricted free agent seems like more than a coincidence. Why rush the Diaw decision?

No it doesn't. Jazz can't use their MLE to sign Thabo, Jerebko AND Udoh. Once they agreed to terms with all three, Diaw no longer was an option to be traded. They need to clear some cap space. Waiving Diaw and renouncing Withey clears enough cap room.

We made our run at 3 FA's. The MLE is only 8.4m. How do we fit in $12+ for Udoh. Jerebko and Sefolosha?

By waiving Diaw to free up cap room. Those three will be officially signed and then a couple days later, Ingles will get his new contract.

Uhh, Jazz fans got mad for Hayward dragging out an obvious decision but Jazz should take as long as possible to waive Diaw?

Communication is the difference. I would bet they had better communication with Diaw than Hayward did with anyone, as we see by Diaw already thanking everyone. If you think he hasn't already been talking to other teams you are nuts. Would not surprise me to see the announcement of his waiver and the announcement of him agreeing to a deal with a new team break within minutes.

Log... That's the first intelligent thing I have ever heard come out of your mouth. Congrats. Here's looking to the future. It can only go up from last year's offseason predictions, eh?

Also, the Jazz let Diaw go 3 days before the deadline. That's more than most teams would have done.

Finally, Simmons plays the SF spot with the Spurs. He came off the bench behind Kawhi. I find it shocking that the Spurs didn't keep 'their guy' in Simmons. If the Jazz signed him to play the 3 spot behind Hood or as Hoodsurance then I would be thrilled. I think that a 2 year $20 million dollar contract would be stellar. I don't think I would pay any more than that given our current group and depth. But he would be a great grab to help out our weakest spot.

Hood (injury prone) often plays the 2 spot
Joe Johnson is amazing, but getting older and that 'hot box' stuff can only go so far before an injury comes plus he often plays the 4 spot for us
Joe Ingles is a specialty stretch player who played the 2 and the 3 depending on the lineups
Thabo is a defensive specialist who gives us depth

In a league with a zillion wings and guards, having Simmons would be fine. Necessary? NOPE. But it does appear we have the cap space for it and the timing is right with the Diaw move and the QO rejection from the Spurs.

Did you see how badly Simmons played last year? That's why they dont want to keep him.

Simmons the kind of dude your stoked to have on a minimum contract but then time comes to pay him and you say no thanks.

If he didnt have a couple of good playoff games no one would be talking about this dude as a wanted FA. Small sample size of good performances compared to a lot of meh.

I way prefer Jingles to Simmons. I'm happy with where the Jazz are at in regards to the roster and depth. Last 2 questions to be answered -

1.) Do they keep Neto on his current contract?(I think they will.)

2.) Do they figure out a way to keep Eric Griffin somehow? (I think they'll try to sign him to a 2 way contract although I could see Bolomboy ending up on that instead and Griffin elevated to the 15 man roster.)

LOL. Okay guys....

Simmons is a SF and we don't have a starter right now. If we get Simmons at $10, then we have an option better than making Hood go to SF when he's not big enough yet. Sefolosha is a bench guy. Joe Johnson should be too. I love Mitchell, but there is no reason to force him in this season. If he's that good, he's going to take Hood's spot not a SF.

Simmons can guard 1 through 4. He's an asset. And at $10 per year, he's a steal.

1st Unit
Rubio
Hood
Simmons/Jingles
Favors
Gobert

2nd Unit
Exum
Mitchell
Jingles/Simmons
Johnson
Udoh

Depth - Bradley, Sefolosha, Jerekbo, Burks, Neto

Bolomboy waived
Joe Ingles or Thabo is likely our starting SF IMO. I know nothing about Simmons but I don't see it. I think they are now done.

Yep, and the Jazz didn't leak that they were going to waive him, and then go "Wait, wait, wait. We haven't decided yet guys, we still might keep him. Just keep your eyes on us for a little longer because we crave attention. We'll probably let everyone know tomorrow, but again, we haven't decided yet, so there's still some hope for Boris."

Comparing the two circumstances is pretty dumb. Even the national media criticized Haywood for how ****ty it was handled. Lots of other FAs go through the same thing without being such attention whores. Kind of sad when Chris Paul handles the same situation in a completely professional manner, and then morons are sticking up for Haywood as if he did nothing any different than other FAs and trying compare Utah's handling of Boris as if they are the same thing. Smh

I totally disagree. For starters, basketballreference.com has him playing SG for more than 90% of the time during his two years in the league, so you are basically guessing when you say he's a SF. Besides, for his career, at 10.6, Simmons PER is not only well bellow the league's average - which is 15.0 - but also decreased 11.9 to 9.9. So, basically, Simmons sucks statistically. He looks, to a certain extent, like someone who can create his own shot but nevertheless was assisted in more than half of those. Burks, in comparison, has been assisted in less than 40% of his shots. By the way, he and Burks are quite similar in many respects: they not only have same height, good to great athleticism, but also are inconsistent in their shooting both from mid-range and from outside. Simmons finishes better near the rim, but Burks has been truly awful at that the last few years. On the other hand, Burks is two years younger than Simmons. All in all, signing Simmons would be a very redundant move, IMO.
