Growing up I remember multiple coaches teaching to never look directly at your man or the ball. This was in my Elementary years (grew up in the 90's). I always was taught that and it is amazing how Millsap and Jefferson always have their "head on a swivel" as Jordan calls it in this video.
It seems Jefferson is just lazy on defense and is never even trying for position, but Millsap is always cheating on defense. He is reaching constantly which leads to his fouls because of the bad position(as Gordon Monson's article pointed out). Even when he is guarding his man off the ball he is cheating rather than playing his man straight up. Tonight it just showed even more after Ryan Anderson embarrassed him.
Now I am sure more players do this on our team but not at the same level as Millsap and Jefferson. Tonight both were embarrassed with off the ball defense. Jefferson was caught out of place watching the ball a few times and Lopez walked into the lane for layups.
Favors and Kanter seem to understand positional defense much better than Millsap & Jefferson. I know I am preaching to the choir on how Favors and Kanter are better defensively but the off-ball defense is disgusting on this team. I hope we aren't teaching off ball defense the way Millsap and Jefferson play it.
