I think that considerably improving the chances to have happy and financially successful kids (since many children of professional basketball players try to replicate their career and success) matters way more in life. Especially, since there are many, many women who are attractive but also athletic and tall.

Think about Bronny: how much happier he and his dad would be now if he simply was 4 inches taller? Basketball is a cruel world were height is everything for all kids and adults living in it. If NBA players see themselves encouraging their children to play ball (which almost all of them do) not trying to give their kids the gift of height is very unkind.

But realistically for every person there are many, many "life partners based on who you feel good being with and who makes you happy". For a regular Joe the choice is limited by the fact that most of them simply would not be interested in him. For tall, athletic, famous and reach Kessler the number of potential "life partners based on who you feel good being with and who makes you happy" is very high, so he can start applying additional desirable criteria, such as being tall and athletic. That would make him (and, very likely, his future kids) way more likely in the long run.

Its not that different from someone not marrying a girlfriend because she cannot have children or has a hereditary condition that would most likely be passed to their future children. People do it all the time.
