Reading, writing and racism?

That's what some people claim is the lesson in books created by a North Salt Lake company called Reading Horizons.

One volume shows a Native American girl hunting with a bow and arrow. Another says "Kenyans are able to run very fast". Kings are all depicted as white men and a book titled "Lazy Lucy" shows an young African girl who did not tidy her mud hut...

There are a lot of lazy little girls in Africa.

There, I said it.

Chum Lee is the HOTTEST HOTTIE EVER

hotter than a hot sun and anyone or anything else put together

On an unrelated note, I once worked with a guy named Stanley Lan Lee

I applaud their rejection of traditional gender roles by depicting a little boy in a dress.

So confused. Am I supposed to believe that Kenyans are fast or not? Is that racist to say that lots of Kenyans win marathons?

I heard a radio story about things like "Kenyans are fast" and basically, there is a culture in Kenya at the moment that celebrates runners. So, more Kenyans try and they try harder at running than they would minus that cultural emphasis on being a good runner. More Kenyans training and being involved in that established championship running culture finds the best amongst the best and prepares them to win. Distance running is a practice in enduring pain. If the expectation is that you can endure the pain it turns out you're more likely to endure the pain.

Does Kenya have the worlds best distance running establishment at the moment? Yes. Are Kenyans genetically good runners? Maybe, but not so much that it accounts for their competitive success all by itself.

I think there might be a genetic component to it. Just from a statistical perspective, it is highly unlikely for all populations to have identical maxima and minima of attributes. Since human genetic diversity is limited compared to other species, I doubt you'll find a significant difference in averages if you compared all Kenyans to any other human group, but there might exist a larger number of "highest level performers" in that category compared to most other groups.

I actually read that Africans tend to be a lot more heterogeneous than other ethnicities. A biologist was saying that given the breadth of genetic diversity among African populations, it shouldn't be surprising that more individuals on both ends of the statistical distribution should be present in that population. He was hypothesizing that, for example, if you gathered the fastest and slowest people on Earth, Africans should make up a larger chunk than average of both groups. I have not seen studies that examine the hypothesis (it is difficult anyway given cultural and economic factors), but it makes perfect sense from a biological perspective.
