Lesson learned from previous drafts (First round only)

I have liked a lot of players that the Jazz drafted in the past 18 years since I followed the team and the draft. These players included, but limited to, Luther Wright, Greg Ostertag, Curtis Borchardt, Raul Lopez, Deshawn Stevenson, Kris Humphries, Kirk Snyder and Kosta Koufos. I thought that these were the players the Jazz was able to steal because of the low seed. Yet, the only one that had some success when he was with the Jazz was Ostertag.

On the other hand, players I didn't like actually panned out or at least turned out to be good NBA players. That list includes Andrei Kirilenko, Deron Williams (yes, I wanted Chris Paul), and Gordon Hayward. I guess my taste is just so bad that it's like when talking to my wife, she is holding two dresses and asks me what she should wear. As soon as I point to her right hand, she goes with the one on the left.

If this logic follows through, then I think the Jazz should pick one of the Euros (just Euros so Biyimbo doesn't count) with the 6th pick and Jimmer with the 12th...

So whatever your instincts tell you, the opposite is true. Perhaps you should change your name to Costanza. You are an episode of Seinfeld.

Glad to hear it. -- I'd be quite happy with the a euro (or Bismack) and Jimmer.

The Jazz employ the BWPA strategy when drafting in the first round...Best White Player Available.

Wow, those names gives me the chills. Yes, the Jazz had to draft in the lower part of the first round, but I think one of the things that has handcuffed the Jazz is that Jerry Sloan wasn't big on "overly athletic" players. He would rather have a system player or a player with a specific skill. I think KOC has a little more flexibility with Jerry gone.

I was thinking this thread might be devoid of a Jimmer plug, but you gave in and snuck him in on your last thought :(

But since now you're thinking this way, doesn't that mean that picking a Euro and Jimmer would surely be a bust? Shouldn't the Jazz go with whatever you initially thought now that you want to abandon those picks? But if you think about that then they should go back to a Euro and Jimmer, unless you consider that option too. Then ...

If every instinct you've ever had has been wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.

I say we should do the opposite. Let's take Jimmer at #6 and a Euro at #12.

Let's see what is the opposite of a euro? An Asian? An African? An American? Sounds like the smack would be the best fit?

The opposite of Jimmer? A skinny kid who can't shoot? Sounds like burks?

Lessons from Jazz past: Don't pick the sliding big. Jazz got burned by Ortiz, Wright, Borchard, and to some extent Koufus who were all projected higher, then 'fell' to the jazz.

Lesson #2 from Jazz past: Don't draft a sg. Jazz either draft a guy like Quincy Lewis or Snyder who don't last, or draft a guy like Brewer or Stevenson who can play a little but everyone views as a stop gap and is never seen as a real player.

Lesson #3 from Jazz past: Send scott layden on vaction now, bring him back when the draft is over.

Repped, and Lesson 3 was my favorite!
