What's new

Lets say Hayward walks.. How can they best damage control it?

Everything comes down to situation. If the Jazz were just starting a rebuild and had little talent on their team, I would pay Hayward the max. His contract wouldn't hurt the long-term plans and he would ease the rebuild because he's a young veteran with talent. If the Jazz had one or two established stars on long-term deals, were in title contention, and had little cap space, I would again pay Hayward the max. BUT, in the current situation I would NOT pay him the max. We are at a point in building this team that if we want to win a championship we need to hold as many assets and as much financial flexibility as possible until a trade/FA signing presents itself that can take most of this young team to the next level. We can't do that if we sign Hayward to the max. What do we do after Hayward signs? Let Hood (a player who has the same potential ability as Hayward) and Favors walk? We need to pay Gobert as well, likely the max. So where does a team of Gobert, Hayward, and couple of other guys get you? First or second round every year? Or do we exercise bird rights on the guys we can and go over the tax to keep most of this team together? Can this current group ever become a championship team? See the problem? If you sign Hayward now you lose assets, financial flexibility, or both. Hayward is a good player but does he move the needle so much that you risk everything on keeping him?

If Hayward were moved for good assets there is a possibility the Jazz can keep all of their other young assets without financial strain. You keep assets, you keep flexibility, and you are still a damn good team. Hood can become a similar player to Hayward, he's shown that.

What if we let Hayward walk and then Favors walks (on his own will) as well? Not necessarily because he didn't like it here or was mad, but he might just want to move on.
Whoops, now you're back in total rebuild mode, below the Lakers probably. You assume everyone will want to stay? And they will sit idly by as the Jazz pick and choose who they want to stay. Doesn't work that way.
Favors may go back home to Atlanta for equal or even less money...we just don't know.
So back to my original point - the Jazz will not let a Hayward level talent walk. It's too hard to come by for them.

Are people still being stupid about this? You pay Hayward what the market will bear for him. He is worth that and can be traded for that. He is an asset for any team and doesn't need a "certain situation" to be valuable. He is like the O- of the NBA, and will work for any team. Jazz need to be done with young assets and start collecting proven players. A signed Hayward can turn into more proven players via trade if he becomes redundant, especially as salary cap space becomes more rare league wide.

We are not doing salary dumps, we aren't taking "fliers" on undrafted players or projects, we aren't screwing around anymore. Most of all we are done purposely gimping our team. Getting rid of Hayward this season is purposely gimping your team. You want to trade Hayward for maximum value? Sign him first.

Hayward is the type of player that is never in a million years going to turn down a 5 year max.

Basically the list of guys you can get in free agency if their team wants to keep them is a handful. No one is turning down a 5 year max and no agent is ever going to advise it.

But Jazz can only have one designated player with a 5 year contract. If they give 5 years to Rudy, they can only give 4 years to Gordon and vice versa.

Hopefully someone like Exum, Lyles, or Gobert rises to a higher level. Hayward isnt a championship number 1, but
the loss of his talent hurts us. We need a true alpha dog stud to rise, be our leader, and take over this team.

Worst. post. ever.

You blame the media for being excited about the best regular season record of all time. LOL.

Ok, your brain obviously can't think thoughts. Media Hype is why you see G.S. Warrior fans, hats, on everybody walking around in the U.S. When 3 years ago nobody cared. And yes, congrats best regular season in history. I obviously offended you and you are obviously a fan who jumped on the G.S. Bandwagon during the regular season, otherwise, why would you be offended? Too bad that the Warriors (who broke the regular season record for most wins in a regular season) couldn't hold off the fight of the ferocious 57W-25L Cleveland Cavaliers. Who by the way virtually had no fight all the way up to the finals in the weak and depleted Eastern Conference and still beat the Warriors who won the most games in regular season history. But yes, celebrate the Warriors with the rest of the world that are wearing their hats and clothing line but can't even tell you where the hell the city of "Golden State" Plays at. Such a true fan base.

2nd place is the 1st place of teams that didn't do their job. Who the hell do you want the Jazz to be??? Sounds to me like your content with losing, in that case, join the Brooklyn Nets, they would love your kind to come aboard.

Aaahhhh! I see what we have here. I have been looking for one of your post where you create an original idea of your own. One that you speak your own beliefs. I never found one. I did however find where you criticize everyone else for their thoughts. All of the sudden that is the point where you feel like you have hit puberty and developed the moxies to chime in. I say this in the most sarcastic way possible. "Not a cowardly approach to broach a subject at all". I'm sure that's what you do best is judge others ideas, but you don't really have any of your own? Do You? Instead of putting your own thoughts out there for others to judge and criticize, its easier to just look at others thoughts and reply with the thought that comes most natural to you. The easiest to you. The kind of answer to every question that you have had your whole life.... A stupid answer. Congrats on your bravery. Way to let yourself be heard.

Wow, you got all that from "You blame the media for being excited about the best regular season record of all time."

I'm not offended, I find simpletons amusing, not offensive. Strike one

I'm not a Warriors fan. Strike two.

There is a difference between being a fan and admiring top performance. I admire Spurs but want the Jazz to destroy them. Are you catching on yet? Strike three

Never celebrated the Warriors. Strike four.

Three years ago no one cared about GS because they were not Champions. People jump on bandwagons, duh. How many Bulls fans were there before MJ? Pretty obvious to most, maybe not so much to you. Strike five.

The Cavs underperformance before the finals -- how exactly was that relevant to when they stopped underperforming in the finals. Strike six.

Keep trying hard and "thinking thoughts" - some brains take some time to develop. Good luck.

Everyone knows this...it's a 10-11 hour drive from the city of Utah. I asked Karl Malone and he confirmed.

Par for the course from an entitled Warriors fan. Probably feels that his favorite baseball team deserves more than three strikes when they come up to bat.

Well since two people feel I'm a Warriors fan, I guess I should just accept it as fact and move on. Who can direct me to Wariorsfannz.com?

Got it. To sum up, I am a Warriors bandwagon-jumping fan who is content with losing. Makes perfect sense. No cognitive dissonance whatsoever. I'm glad we have Lakers_Slapper around to "think thoughts."
