If he does get that deal then we can just match anyway right? (I'm thinking he would be restricted but I could be wrong)
If so, then what benefit would there be to extending early? Seems like there would only be downside. (He gets hurt or plays like crap and we regret the extension)

Right... the downside is him getting max or close to it or a 3 plus 1 deal at the same money like Hayward did. If he does that he has stayed healthy and taken a step forward.

I just think if we were at 17-18M and he was at 20 that you figure that out. I think we are nervous about the injury history or he wants that George Hill money and hasn't figured out that the market is working against him next year.

There is risk on both sides. Only takes one team with space and they may try to make the contract toxic so it won't get matched. I doubt it happens but there is risk.

Who is going to give Hood the max? If he does perform well enough for the few teams with cap space to want to offer Hood (a RFA) a max deal, then that's still a win for the Jazz.

I think the Jazz are betting the market will be soft for Hood as an RFA. I think there's merit to keeping $10M in cap space in a league where cap space is becoming scarce, but beyond this I think the Jazz want to see how Mitchell plays, what happens with Favors, etc. In other words, they're pushing the decision down the road and giving Hood the opportunity to earn his contract.

Dallas, Indiana might be the biggest threats.

The maybes - BKN, Sacramento, Philly These teams may not have the space depending on player options and extensions.

Maybe the Lakers once they miss out on all the big boys.

Essentially a very slim market. Not so sure Indiana would be wanting to pay 40% of the salary cap to Dipo and Hood but who knows.

The FA class is also shallow. Zach LaVine, Aaron Gordon (maybe), Avery Bradley, KCP, Jabari Parker, Robert Covington (maybe) are some of the wing/youngish guys. Say Zach and RoCo extend now... it gets really shallow really quick.

If he plays 70 ish games and scores close to 20 a game he will get 20+. If he has the season he had last year I'm not sure he gets a good long term deal... more like a 2/35-40.

I agree pretty much... there is a limited market and the risk for us is not too crazy.

In other news I see Gordon, smart, and Parker aren't getting extensions... Say we think DM is the 2-guard we want now and in the future... any reasonable trade there with Orlando with Gordon and Hood being the main principles? I think he'd be great as a four in our system.

If Hood is getting a 20 million a year offer from other teams, the Jazz are in a VERY good place going forward. You are only counting the RFAs. There are quite a number of UFA's as well, with only 5 or 6 teams with money, and ALL of those teams with the exception of Dallas and Indy have young talent in the hopper that will need to be paid.

There are quite a number of UFA's as well, with only 5 or 6 teams with money, and ALL of those teams with the exception of Dallas and Indy have young talent in the hopper that will need to be paid.

I mentioned a few UFAs but omitted bigs. Also didn't consider guys like Lebron PG.

I agree is he warrants the contract we good... just saying there is still some risk that if he's healthy and plays well the price may go up from 17-20 to 25-28... it's not a good chance but it's a chance.
