Here's something fun. I'm going to go through each of the drafts over the couple of years and try and predict who the Jazz would have taken given their "modern needs and outlook" but with the talent and projections of those individual drafts (so I can't pick Ginobili or Boozer with #9 even if they turned out better.
Feel free to provide your own interpretation
2009 Draft
Actual Pick (#9): Demar Derozan to Toronto
Adjusted Pick: Tyler Hansborough (Actually drafted 13 to Indy)
The Jazz were already in love with Hansborough, and were praying Indiana would pass over him. I see them drafting for need here with no idea whether Boozer will stay. The big-man pool was rather shallow at this point, and Hansborough is a decent Tebow-style pick here. I could a trade down 2 or 3 spots just to get something out of the #9, but not letting Indi steal Hansborough.
2008 Draft
Actual: DJ Augustine- Bobcats
Adjusted: Brook Lopez (actually drafted 10 to NJ)
An easy call right here, Lopez is a talented bigman who can rebound and score, and the Jazz have a thing for stanford twins.
2007
Actual: Joakim Noah- Bulls
Adjusted- Joakim Noah
Its a toss up between Noah and Hawes here. But I chose Noah, because Hawes is essentially the same skill set as Okur, and Noah is a good rebounding replacement for Booze if he hits the deck.
2006
Actual: Patrick O' Bryant -- GSW
Adjusted: Saer Sene (#10 to Sonics)
Everyone was caught up in Sene's hype in this draft, and the Jazz may have bitten. Surely he could provide some length to combat Gasol in our yearly playoff match up with LA. Sene comes out in this one barely above Pattie Bryant because I'm a whore for hype. I know we were all horny for Redick in this draft, but with Korver, we can essentially have the Redick skill set if we're willing to pay
2005 Draft
Actual: Ike Diogu -GSW
Adjusted: Fran Vasquez (11- Magic)
We already got our guy in this draft, but for discussion's sake-- Vasquez and Andrew Bynum were both available at this point, but Bynum was a project and Vasquez was a polished european. This would have been the ****-pants moment in Jazz history-- a few months after the draft-- we'd all be crying about watching our Knicks picked turn Len-Bias-esque (or rubio-esque???) and that would have been a great time. There was a pocket of several talented guards, swingmen, and undersize forwards after this... and they are intriguing, but my guess is center would be our concern, especially with 2 to choose from.
2004 Draft
Actual: Andre Igoudala (philly)
Adjusted: Andre Igoudala
its a toss up between Igoudala and Biedrins at this point. Biedrins is clearly a stiff (hasn't changed) but he has some rebounding prowess, but we would be turned off by his inability to shoot and ZERO post presence. Igoudala is an athletic freak, and although he doesn't have great touch, the organization would see his ability to fit into the offense and flourish in a roll where Ronnie Brewer only showed glimmers of light.
2003 Draft
Actual: Michael Sweetney (Knicks)
Adjusted: Nick Collison (#12- Sonics)
The Kansas farm-boy apparatus shows its ugly head again. Not a lot of talent at center seen at this point, however Sweetney screams "undersized and overweight" and at this point Collison's 2 inch advantage on Sweetney seems to be the edge. Visions of Pau Gasol using Sweetney's head as an anchor for his hook shot instantly turn KOC to Collison. I see signs of a trade to get Chris Kaman right here, but most likely talk would be shot down.
2002 Draft
Actual: Amar'e Stoudamire
Adjusted: Amar'e Stoudamire
Amar'e would step into a roll where the Jazz could flourish in an up tempo offense, but he also shows the intangibles of boozer without the lack of height of Millsap, if either of them have to be sacrificed. Caron Butler is tempting at this point, because he's an intangibles guy, but Stoudamire is overly tempting.
Through all of this... I see very few scenarios with this pick where I would end up ultimately unhappy (Vasquez, Sene)...
Hell... most of these picks project the Jazz into contender status if they kept to form.
There may have been a bit of bias, because I know how everything turned out in the long run, but I would say this is accurate to an extent.
