Out of curiosity, how will Maggette's game help the Jazz?

He's a wing which we so desperately need and has been crushing it lately since he's gotten PT. He can rebound well (which we need) and pass decently. He can go one-on-one and create and/or get to the line at high rates (which we need). He can, well, um, sort of shoot. His percentages are down this year but I think in the right situation, that would improve. He can also defend decently. That said, I'm not crazy about the idea. Like I said, the contract is bad. But it's not awful. And he'd be a huge upgrade over Bell imo.

Out of curiosity, how will Maggette's game help the Jazz?

He gets to the free throw line, can create his own shot, makes the othe team's 2 man up on D and not just float in a zone like they some have, and he can hit the curl jumper.

But on the other hand, Matt Harpring hates him, he is "selfish," not as good on D as Bell, and tries to score a lot.

I guess that settles it - we don't need him, he obviously hurts far more than he'd help.

Maggette is not even close to being what the Jazz need. The Walking Corpse of Richard Hamilton would be a better fit, but his contract is too prohibitive.

In hindsight, we'd then be stuck with his contract and Bell's. But Mr. Glass coming off the books makes it seem not so bad. And, um, who knows, maybe we can trade Bell, to say the Lakers who admittedly might have to make a move to shake things up.

I hear you and realize Maggs has pretty much never won whereever he's gone (unless I'm forgetting some anomaly of a season) but we need someone dammit and I gotta think we saw something in him years ago to offer him that contract.

The 2003 offer was not a normal offer. Their first target was Elton Brand, but he jumped at Miami's offer sheet (which the Clippers matched). Then the Jazz went after Andre Miller and Brad Miller, both of whom signed elsewhere. The fanbase got restless. I've heard that the offersheet (and later the Jason Terry offer) was extended by the Jazz only because they had to put on the appearance of doing something. They knew full well that both offers would be matched. Then again, the Jazz were a team without an identity at the time. Stockton had retired and Malone left for the Lakers. The Jazz were trying to figure out how to market Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harpring, Greg Ostertag, and John Amaechi. Things turned out well when they finally got their guy and Keon Clark came aboard.
