Sounds like someone has mommy issues.

Honestly, it isn't the best idea, but as a country, our public education system is broken. I don't blame the system wholly. In my opinion, many parents are failing on their end as well.

Either way, something should be done. Not sure what the best solution is.

Wholly? As an educator let me say, the system needs tweaking. I'm fine with tenure reform and more accountability and so forth. I really am. It needs to happen and has happened, at least in NJ. But at the end of the day, 85% of the problem is the parents. That's it. It's really that simple.

The solution? People wouldn't like my Orwellian response.

well, hopefully they will teach evolution. USA needs to catch up on whole world in that regard.

They may not like it but I am interested in hearing it. I agree that even the best teacher in the world will find it difficult to overcome bad parents.

I get scared when I hear liberals like LogGasm claim there is problem, blame some ambiguous group and then they demand "something should be done".

Media indoctrination of America is almost complete.

There have always been bad parents. One question, has the system gotten better, worse, or stayed the same over the past several decades? What about parental involvement, has that gotten worse or improved or stayed the same? I know our place on the world stage of education has gotten worse, but is that just because we have stagnated or are we getting worse overall or not improving fast enough?

Worse because The Obama and The Bush try to destroy it. They convince America through liberal media that it needs change so they can put into place creativity destroying early education system. You read that HuffPo I give? It is all there, many sightations. We need to teach child's to explore questions of their own. None of this demand memorize numbers and letters and colors. That is good for state who wants easy brainwashed subjects. Not good for child's to become inventor scientist and engineer.

If its not broke dont twerk it.

The problem is we have a one size fits all system that does not promote learning, but instead teaches to the lowest common denominator (at least at the HS I went to). Generals in college have a similar vibe. I agree parents have a lot to do with it. They take no responsibility, even when their kids don't show up for school. I thing a big problem these days is parents are actually getting worse and they feel they are entitled to have the government wholly educate their kids. It is a joke. It has been tested whether cash payments will incentivise kids to do better. Overall it hasn't.

I have no problem paying taxes to allow children to have free education (which most state constitutions require). However, it is a waste when parents don't instill values into their children to appreciate what they are given, and when you get something for free, that can't be taken away, it creates an environment for uncaring and indifference for both parents and children

I think it would make sense to send people to schools based on testing scores, and let those that can excel have the opportunity to do so. This will in turn incentivise parents to teach their kids to help them succeed. I also think we need to pay a lot more money to our educators (which means we will be hiring more qualified educators). I actually am in favor of removing the tenure system from public colleges, and it has no place in k-12. It creates a system that many teachers exploit.

Our system of teaching to the lowest common denominator is pulling us down.

"One of the unintended consequences of NCLB was the shrinkage of time available to teach anything other than reading and math. Other subjects, including history, science, the arts, geography, even recess, were curtailed in many schools. Reading and mathematics were the only subjects that counted in calculating a school’s adequate yearly progress, and even in these subjects, instruction gave way to intensive test preparation. Test scores became an obsession. Many school districts invested heavily in test-preparation materials and activities. Test-taking skills and strategies took precedence over knowledge. Teachers used the tests from previous years to prepare their students, and many of the questions appeared in precisely the same format every year; sometimes the exact same questions reappeared on the state tests. In urban schools, where there are many low-performing students, drill and practice became a significant part of the daily routine."

This was all predicted before The Bush waged war on America.

There have always been bad parents but imo, there has been an increase in them. I am curious about how the urbanization of America over the last 100 years may have played a role in this.

We're not as bad on the world stage as many of these articles would like you to believe. Many of those reports aren't even close to apples to apples comparisons.

My solution? Re-instituting the draft, inserting contraceptive implants into all females at the age of 12, and having all kids meet the requirement of graduating high school (or getting their GED) by a certain age and then either furthering their education or finding meaningful employment thereafter within 24 months are just a few of the things I'd strongly consider.

Outside the constitutional issues of your solution, how do you make kids graduate from high school? And what is the result if they don't?

Does home schooling and other such educational courses count as "graduating" in your solution?

Not on board with implanting contraceptives in girls.

I possibly could be persuaded on the draft. Honduras has soem of their special forces patrol with local police units. If they catch young adults gangbanging and what not the forcibly conscript them into the military.
