Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Wow. Cant believe I just read 275 posts on this. I also love Wes and what he brought to the team. But there is no way I match that offer. He is in no way worth that kind of money. I can't believe the owners are throwing around this kind of money this year. They must really think they are going to get that none guarenteed contract clause that they want in next years CBA talks.

- Can you prove me that Millsap does not deserve that contract? He could easily be considered a talented, promising and reliable, multidimensional bigmen, IMO. Do you agree?
I do agree. Millsap's contract was only bad the first year. Otherwise it's a steal. But like Wes, Millsap would have been a backup in Portland - so Portland had no reason to throw a toxic first year at him except the Jazz were so transparent in their love for Paul (Millsap). As has been said about Wes playing behind Roy, it made no sense for Portland to throw a big offer at Millsap playing behind Lemarcus. Portland's move with Millsap had more to do with playing the Jazz rather than playing the actual hand. I'm glad the Jazz matched on Millsap, but I don't think Portland would have offered Millsap that much - certainly not so heavy the first year - if they hadn't seen the Jazz gush their love of Millsap. So Jazz had to eat it that first year -- and that first year put the squeeze on Greg Miller and perhaps resulted in Jazz giving Maynor away for nothing.

In regards to Okur - I like Okur. It's not terrible - but the Jazz were bidding against themselves. That isn't the best example. AK's is a good example though (and I still like AK - just not at that price).

- From where, or which of KOCs or any team management member's comments did you get te impression that the Jazz will do anything to keep Matthews, i.e, they are in love with WEs?
I don't remember - on sportsbeat or something. I shook my head when I heard it. I mean, for a guy who's says "no comment" more than any other GM, KOC really picks his spots to start blabbing -- only when he really really wants to resign a guy. I wonder if he's only thinking about being sure the player knows that the Jazz they really like him, and at the same time forgetting about other GM's / Owners out there like Portland that have proven themselves to be ******* sharks.

I, for one, do not think that Jazz FO will match that offer, at all. They are reported to find players who they can add by using the MLE, which Wes insisted on but KOC declined. I also do not want them to match that heavy contract.
I hope they don't. I love Matthews, but not for that price. Bring back Brew.

I do not care anymore. Trade the whole team and start over. Jazz are going to suck next year. No Boozer, Korver or Matthews. Maybe we can see if Harp is healthy again since everyone wants to bring back Brick layer Brewer. How is his hamstring? KOC is a pathetic GM.

Hey it ain't my money. But I'd hate for it to result in the tightening of the payroll belt later on like what happened with Maynor.

I'm not much in the business of caring too much about what to pay our players. Just get us the players. And I laugh at all of these people that say stuff like "he's not worth that much." Well the market just said he's worth that much. That's how free markets work.

I think we match it. We simply cannot put in the scouting, training, and grooming work on a player just to let some other team come along and cherry pick him away.

I go for a run and come back to see this ****? ****ing Blazers man. Gotta let him walk as much as I hate to see him go. Matthews is replaceable and simply not worth that much money.

The Blazers decided he was worth that much. Now it's up to the Jazz to decide if he is. I am of the opinion that he is not, and thus the team I root for should not match it.

Boy, the Blazers sure do know how to have a good time, at the expense of Jazz fans. Good luck Wesley. Have a nice life.

The Jazz may be overpaying for Wes, but they need to sack-up and match this offer. Here's why:

#1- Even though Ronnie Brewer had his flaws, he was a good player for this team, this system and was a moral booster for out best player. The Jazz traded Ronnie specifically because of what Wes was starting to give them on the court. Trading Ronnie was the Jazz's way of saying that they felt Wes was the starting SG of the future for this orginization.

#2- They let Korver and Boozer walk without putting up a fight. While I agree with those decisions, you can't spend the entire offseason letting other teams pillage your roster. It sends the wrong message to your fans, as well as the other GM's around the league.

#3- Is a $33 million deal too much for Wes? Yes and no. At over 9 million, it's certainly too much for the first year (nearly 30% of the contract is that 1st year alone), but Utah needs to just bite down hard and bear it through the first year of his contract much like they did with Millsaps. After that, it's a much easier contract to swallow.

#4- Portland is a division rival with a rich A-hole of an owner who thinks the can eventually put the screws to a small market division foe like Utah. Show him for a 2nd consecutive year that he's simply not going to swoop in and steal the talent that the franchise spent serious time and effort acquiring and cultivating. Sooner or later Paul Allen will figure out that he's barking up the wrong tree and try to cherry pick somebody else's players.

This is not the Millsap situation. With Millsap, the Jazz had three years of data. They had a player who had demonstrated not just an ability to start, but start at a high level. Millsap is also a genuine NBA athlete, and a big man (cue the jokes), and big men come at a premium. They could reasonably project Millsap to be well worth that offer sheet.

Matthews is the opposite. They have one year of data. They have a player who started by default, filled his role admirably, but has clear deficiencies. He's barely an average NBA athlete. And he plays a position where there are always bargains.

Separate the emotion, and this is a no brainer. Bid Wes luck, and spend the money elsewhere on better values.

Well said. Wes isn't going to make a hill of beans difference in the won/loss column.
