Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

If Wes was wiling to take less money to play on the Jazz, the deal would have probably been done by now. The only way he signs with the Jazz right away is if they offer him what Portland offered him. But as a restricted FA, their goal is to go and find the best offer they can. They aren't stupid enough to jump at the first offer they get. They can see the ridiculous salaries FA's are getting this offseason.

The whole point is that KOC had no idea that this offer was even coming (he was bracing for 25 mil offer after telling Wes to go find an offer elsewhere), hence was out of touch with the situation, and we let Korver get signed somewhere else too (for far more reasonable amount). I am not disagreeing with you here that Wes contract is high, and perhaps matching is not the best idea. But I also don't like Jazz FO to sit on their asses and just wait for things to happen around them as available player pool gets drier and drier by the hour, while other teams pick up players, including 3 of our own. Let's see what KOC comes up with on Monday when he is going to "take a look" and assess the situation.

Why would the Blazers or Wes' camp be willing to tell them what the Blazers are offering, even if he KOC did try to find out (which we have no way or knowing whether he did or didn't)? It wouldn't be to either party's advantage to tell them what the Blazers were offering. It's not like the Jazz could have offered more than the Blazers are offering. I think you are expecting something that isn't logical.

As far Korver goes, I will agree with you that I wish they have been more proactive in talking to Korver. But perhaps they felt absolutely no use for Korver when they drafted Hayward no matter what. They had to know a worse case scenario with Wes was possible. So, who knows.

I am expecting the team to be involved with negotiations about a player they like instead of saying go find another offer, then brace themselves for 25 mil offer and get shocked when something else comes in, and lose another wing in the process for far more reasonable amount. Is that so illogical?

Who says they weren't? The Jazz probably made an offer that Wes wasn't willing to accept, so he went and found one that he liked better.

And obviously we value Korver more than the Jazz did. They must feel Hayward easily replaces him. That I would say I don't agree with the Jazz on, not the handling of Wes' contract.

Now that's the "whole point," eh, Borat? Earlier in this thread you were adamant that the Jazz should NOT match a 25 million offer. Was KOC supposed to make him sign a contract for $3 million a year at gunpoint? You will really go to any length to try to give the impression that you're brilliant and that KOC is just plumb stoopid, won't ya?

Sorry, but it aint workin. Worse than that, actually. It's straight-up back-firin.

I like KOC. Which is why I am surprised he is yet to get off his *** this summer and do something. Maybe on Monday, as he said.

Indulge me, what is pathetic about the Jazz off season so far?
Drafting the great white bust, letting the 2nd best player on the team (by far) walk for what will probably become nothing (just like the Harpring TPE will), losing a player that just set a record for highest 3-pt FG% over a season, and either losing or overpaying for the only cool part about last year.

This offseason is terrible.

Good points - except drafting bust. Did you catch any summer league games by any chance?

Speaking of Michael Beasley, didn't he wind up on the Timberwolves for nothing (meaning the Jazz could've nabbed him)?

And if there's such a thing as karma, Brandon Roy's knee shatters and Microsoft goes bankrupt. The Blazers are a complete ******* organization.

Remember when Michael Beasley was amazing in summer league? Or more importantly, DJ Strawberry?

Ah, some random people in the past were busts despite playing well in the summer league, which means Hayward is also a bust. Of course! How could I not see that?!
