They may or may not match, but this doesn't suggest that to me. If he wanted the max, and could actually get that offer, they could always match, so there was no reason to offer the max up front, whether they intended to match, or not.
 
This is reminding me more and more of Shandon Anderson. Jazz gave him a chance when nobody else would. Jazz gave him chances to play and put him in a system where he thrived. He kept saying how much he appreciated the jazz for doing that. Then when he had the chance, he bolted to Houston for the money. His own brother told him that it would be best if he stayed with the jazz. But somehow, he got an ego, thought he had earned everything the jazz gave him, believed that he was a legit player in the league.
Well, he got his money and had a forgetable career.

I see this happening with Wesley. When this deal is over, he'll be out of the league (unless the jazz match). Going to Porty is career purgatory and nobody will want a 29 year old guy who had one sort of decent year of promise and then spent 5 years as an 11th man.

While I agree with you, if you are 23 years old looking at 35 million in the face are you really thinking ahead that far?
 
I agree, Craig. I think that, perhaps due to listening to the greed of his agent, Matthews may well have overplayed his hand. If the Jazz don't match, he is leaving a system that he can thrive in, and one where he KNOWS he'll be a starter (at least for now). Both the Jazz AND Matthews gained from being here, but I suspect that the Jazz can more easily replace Matthews on the team than Matthews can find a team which will replace the role he had with the Jazz.
 
Borat, you need to realize that Matthews wasn't going to sign for less than the max he could, whether or not the Jazz offered anything or not. It's obvious Wesley's camp came in pretty much demanding the max. Jazz refused to go at the max, and Wesley found it. Nothing else matters now.

In short, if Matthews wasn't dead serious about his demand for the max, he simply could have given the Jazz his lowest offer (for them, alone) BEFORE he signed the Portland deal. He was dead serious as he previously said (no hometown discount), and he didn't offer to take less.

But mebbe if KOC had got down on his knees and BEGGED, as the entire City of Cleveland did with Lebron....

$35 million, $30 million, what's the real difference? If you can get that money at age 24, and aren't a complete fool, you'll never have to work another day in your life after your contract is up.

The people who want to blame the Jazz here should realize that this was entirely in Matthews control, not the Jazz's. Had he been so inclined, Matthews could have, at ANY time, simply told his agent:

"Ya know what? I hate to leave my friends, and my role with the Jazz. Why doncha go see if they'll offer me $30 million before I sign this deal, which I'm afraid they won't match?"

On the other hand, who knows? Matthews coulda been tellin his agent: "I wouldn't want to go back to Utah for $15 million a year. Just get me out of there, if you possibly can."

Who says they were bracing for a 25 M contract. Many feared a full max would be out there once the playoffs finished. Many HOPED for a partial MLE would be enough, I was not one of them. The Jazz were "bracing" for a full MLE. the best case scenario was a 25 M offer unfortunately the well anticipated worst case scenerio came to pass. The Jazz know exactly what their plan is, although we may not.
