Mighty Quin interested in Spur's Assistant Engelland

Sounds like Brad Jones or Alex Jensen is on the way out. I'm thinking its Brad Jones since he could be bitter about not getting the job.

Also Alex Jensen was at the Aaron Gordon workout.

How many assistants are there? 3?
Yes, three, but the Jazz also have a couple of player development guys.

Last season the assistants were Lowe, Sanders and Jones. Both Sanders and Jones had previously been in director of player development roles before being promoted (Sanders was promoted when Layden left and then Jones replaced Hornacek). The player development roles aren't NBA bench jobs - they actually sit behind the Jazz' bench during games.

This past season, Alex Jensen and Johnnie Bryant were the player development coaches for the Jazz.

I could see Jensen and Jones being hired by Quin, with Jones perhaps being lead assistant and Jensen in the #2 seat. I think they'll push for Bryant to take over as HC for the Idaho Stampede. Bryant came to the Jazz after having his own business, "Bryant Skills Academy" and really put himself on the Jazz radar by working with Ronnie Price and then Paul Millsap, amongst other clients. He would be very valuable in the D-League as it morphs into more of a minor league system. Or you create a new title for him and he oversees player development for both the Jazz AND Stampede roster without any coaching responsibilities/distractions. That might be very attractive for him as he has a degree in sports management (I love the google!).

Both Jensen and Bryant have been working for Lindsey doing the pre-draft workouts. Obviously, Snyder needs to have control over hiring his assistants, but I could see DL make a strong push to retain both of those guys in some sort of capacity. Jensen is the hottest candidate to be hired elsewhere as he's already had success as a D-League coach and has more charisma than Brad Jones.

Maybe they want this respected shooting coach for a specific player...................................??

Aaron Gordon with a jumpshot is the 3rd best player in this year's draft.

Getting him at #5 would therefore be a FANTASTIC steal.

I see that many came to the same conclusion.

Hiring Chip would probably be the biggest heist imaginable. I'd almost rather have Chip than a top 3 pick (vs a 5th pick). Complete franchise-changer, potentially. I feel like literally every player improves their shot after joining the Spurs.

I don't think they are connected. The Jazz would love to have him regardless of who we have on the team or might draft.

Of course. But it also makes drafting Gordon more palatable. Kind of like how the Spurs were really excited to draft Kawhi, because they knew they could improve his shot.

A quick google search didn't yield what I was looking for in regards to Jensen and Jones, but 1280 mentioned in no uncertain terms the day Snyder was hired that Jensen and Jones are on the staff. So... *shrug*.

I remember something similar. It was like they will work with the Jazz no matter what, but capacity was yet to be determined.

Confirming Jazz will hire Quin Snyder as head coach. Team is expected to hire Brad Jones as an assistant and promote Alex Jensen to bench.

This would leave a development coach position to fill. I think Engelland has strictly been a shooting coach to date, and a promotion to development coach would make sense for him and the Jazz.

I should have just read more before I posted.

From the sounds of it, yes.

Every player on the Jazz roster and any player(s) the Jazz draft will need to improve their shooting. This is not a hire for one person.

I like Dal's post, this is a franchise changer.

Is it weird that this would actually excite me more than the Quin Snyder hire? not saying i am not optimistic about Quin. If the Spur's shot doctor is as good as that glowing grantland piece makes it seem, then his value is franchise-changing, as others have said.

i wont get my hopes up though.

I love the idea of Chip Engelland, but I think it will take a miracle. For what he did w/ Kawhi, T. Parker, and D. Green, I am sure he is considered King Midas in that organization.

GS job is likely more attractive as he steps right in to a contending team. Plus he's been Kerr's coach. Snyder likely knows him from being in the SA organization, but I'd say GS has the inside track.

But does GSW really need him? I mean, they have Klay & Curry for a backcourt. As a coach, you want to feel like you're making an impact on a player, and I'm not sure he would get that satisfaction there. How much better could Steph & Klay get?

At least Utah would be a real challenge for him. Hard to imagine us getting him, though.

Kind of like how the Spurs were really excited to draft Kawhi, because he fell to them in the 20's after being projected in the top 8 in mock drafts and they knew they were getting a steal.

fixed

Possibly. But this is the point that you start offering a heck of a lot more money to get him. The Jazz absolutely need a coach with this type of knowledge and emphasis if they want to improve their offense. Pay the man and lock it up.

This. I would rather have Chip than any free agent available in the next couple of years. If there was a choice, that'd be my decision.

I'm sure they saved some money on the Snyder hire, so now it's time to splurge on surrounding him w/ the right people.

It's amazing to me that an NBA team can willingly pay a guy like Marvin Williams 7 million per year, but will pinch pennies to avoid having to pay a very good assistant coach a real salary. I understand that players are the stars and that the impact from coaches isn't that great. . . but it's not insubstantial either. A guy like Engelland should be worth more to a team like the Jazz that NEED everyone on their team to become better shooters.

Imagine Favors with a mid-range game and Burks way more consistent from beyond the arc? That helps with both P&R and spacing. He's only ever been a shooting coach, and an upgrade plus pay raise is going to be needed to get him. Promote him and then offer 20% more than GSW are offering. Assembling a rock-star coaching staff is critical for a team like this that struggles to compete for stars. Gotta build them yourself.
