Mike Conely... If we Get This...

If Conley is better than prime Deron we are making the finals. (I have a hard time believing he’d be better than 21/10/4 on 46/35/85%)

Conley wasn't that far off that pace last year actually. The assists about the only thing he hasn't matched, but Utah runs a different game from the Sloan days.

The more I deep dive statistics and the more I watch highlights of Conley and Bogdanovic and the other new guys the more excited I get about this team. The two things that stand out most to me and stick with me...

1) The Jazz generated the most open shots in the NBA last season. And now they have so many guys on the roster who sink open 3's at a high rate. Mitchell, Conley, Bogdanovic, Ingles, O'neale, Niang, Green.

2) Gobert/Crowder/Ingles/Mitchell/Rubio was the most effective 5 man lineup in the entire NBA last season. That was with Crowder's shooting %s of 39.9/33.1 and Rubio's shooting %s of 40.4/31.1. Now imagine that lineup with Bogdanovic's shooting %s of 49.7/42.5 and Conley's shooting %s of 43.8/36.4, AND with a similar level of defense....

Excuse me, I need a cold shower real quick.

Pretty good post. Utah has had top 5-man units for a couple seasons now. In 2018, they had a top 5 team with Favors and that unit also made it through your filters last season. The problem Utah had is the same we all know - not having enough creators to get baskets when things stagnate. They now have 2 guys who can, two who kinda can, and the league's best rim runner.

I haven't been excited for a season to start for several years. This one can't come soon enough. I have high hopes but tempered expectations. There's more than a good chance this team is even better than what I expect they could be. @infection or @dalamon where's a goofy thread about #prayforhealth?

Last year he was kinda close to those numbers

A word of caution on that "open shots" statistic: Part of the reason we had so many open 3s is because defenses were betting we wouldn't make them. In other words, defenses encouraged Rubio, Crowder, and -- god forbid -- Favors to shoot 3s, while denying the ball to Ingles and Korver.

I can’t help but think we generated open looks because teams didn’t guard us. The guys that were open the most was Rubio and Crowder and it seemed Corver was rarely all that open, he had to employ a deadly fast release.
Sorry, I didn't read your post before saying the same thing in mine.

The caution should really go out to all the other teams. Because now they can’t slack off of our point guard or our PFs, they’re going to have to play top3 defense to stop us.

I DGAF if they were letting Rubio and Crowder shoot. Try that **** against this starting five, and just watch what happens.

Agreed. But there in lies the rub then for the defense then. Do they leave guys like Conley and Bojan open, or do they allow Ingles and Donovan to pick them apart, or even allow Rudy to go to work down low with some PnR or lob actions? Regardless, we are improved on paper. It should hopefully translate well to the court.

Conley may not have the assists and rebounds D-Will had but he's on-par with the scoring, is a better defender and leader and last season he was 44/36/84.5%

Also, based on the D-Will year you chose, D-Will had more turnovers (1.9 VS 3.5).

It's going to be fun watching Conley play.

Sure, which meant that much of the focus was on Donovan and preventing lobs to Gobert. So now they will have to guard us on the 3-pt line and allow Donovan to take more efficient shots and get Gobert more extreme efficiency opportunities.

And because the Jazz should miss fewer shots, especially long range shots, we should be playing with a set defense more often on the other end.

It's a win-win.

I don't think any teams are going out there getting horrible shooters so that teams don't guard them so that the horrible shooters can get open looks.

If he stays healthy, then it will be like it was when Rubio had big games. Expect that every night. But again, it's if he can stay healthy. A healthy Rubio is worth more than a hurt Conley

I thought we had an all nba, all star, Olympian and top 2 PG?

That’s what I was thinking too. Somebody forgot about Deron... Although I think there’s a good possibility Conley could have a career year this year and yes the numbers seem pretty comparable.

Until the NBA does hockey assists- I think it’d be hard for any one player to get a high average assist numbers in Quinn’s system. Assists seem to get more spread out among all players as opposed to any one player - even PGs. Rubio has been a great distributer throughout his career and his numbers dipped here.

It’ll be interesting to watch Conley this year. I might be alone here, and I might be convinced otherwise, but as of now, it’d be difficult for me to take even prime Conley over prime Deron.

Prime deron is better obviously imo. Not really close

Conley needs to be better than Rubio. I think that’s pretty achievable.

The bigger question is if Bojan/Davis can be more valuable and/or productive than Derrick Favors.

I've wondered that, but it's two sides to the same coin. If we're getting a lot of open looks because a bunch of people aren't being guarded, it's because someone else is being heavily guarded. If we don't get as many open looks, at least we're making the defense honest.

This. Exactly this. We had so many wide open shots because of Rubio and others that couldn't make any shot some nights. And with that Donovan was always guarded way more close. Now the defense can't cheat on Donovan because Conley and Bogo are gonna be open if you do. Expect to see Donovan's efficiency numbers go way up
