What's new

MIL Bucks @ YOUR Utah Jazz.. tonight at 7pm mtn on ROOT

And he was terrible his 1st year
he was terrible his 1st year.

I disagree.
I remember liking what I saw from him when he was actually able to get on the court.
I was always wishing he could get more minutes

I still think Exum was the right pick. We have to swing for the fences to try to get stars from the draft.

I agree. We did need to swing for the fences and with the way Trey played last season, PG was also our greatest area of need. We had our big rotation set (or so we thought) and starters at the wings. Exum and Embiid were about equal in terms of risk/reward. IMO, the only other viable options were Smart or Randle or possibly Vonleh, who some experts had fairly high. Smart has performed pretty much as advertised; he's struggling with his shooting. Surprisingly, Smart isn't averaging many more FG attempts than Exum (6 attempts per game vs. just under 5). He's about 4% better on his overall FG;s and 3's.

Wonder what others think. Better defender: Exum or Smart?

Smart's game is scarily close to Exum's. I posted a comparison a while ago. I don't know if the numbers have changed since then, but at the time Smart was drawing a little bit more fouls, but was both driving less and having less success on his drives. Here it is:
https://jazzfanz.com/showthread.php?36350-Marcus-Smart-vs-Dante-Exum-a-bit-of-perspective

About the defense - right now Smart is better and has more immediate impact. I see him being an elite defender down the road(if he's not already), but I kind of doubt he can develop much of an offensive game. I think Dante's offensive potential is higher.

Trey played in the toughest conference at the time. While Jimmer and Adam didn't. Which is completely beside my point. If Jimmer and Adam was in Trey's position of being a young player showing plenty of flashes I would be saying the exact samething about either.

We know he hasn't, but how many second year pg's are playing at a consistent level? Especially now with the position being about as deep as it ever been in the history of the league? His situation with the team hasn't been consistent it's not realistic to expect his play to do so with so little experience.
Don't get me wrong I'm happy with Burke's play lately but CJ Miles says hi
And he was terrible his 1st year and has shown great growth. But even Enes was with a college team. I don't know if he practiced or not did not keep up with him there but he was with a college team for a year before being drafted. I also think it's a lot different for a PG. But Enes is a fair comparison and he was terrible his 1st year.

actually X played pretty good to start the year, he has since then hit the rookie wall

Enes was also physically able to compete in the NBA. Exum isn't. And Enes has never lacked confidence.

smart, by far.

How big has/will being the starter help Exum. He isn't some overhyped weakling that spent half the year in the DLeague. He is the STARTING PG on a very hot team right now. If we finish the year 18-10, that's a .643 winning percentage, or 53 wins next year.

How does that help you get motivated, knowing you are the starting PG for a very, very good team? That has to help give you confidence while working to get bigger, stronger, faster. Once Exum decides to take it to the rim, watch out. Gobert and Exum P&R could be nasty. Alley oops all over the place. Unstoppable. With Gordan and Snell/Hood/Matthews/Burks on the wings? Our offense goes from horrible to incredible very quickly.

I think Exum starting this year will pay off big time this summer.

Or it could work the exact opposite. Exum may think all he needs to do to help the team win is just continue to pass off to Hayward and go hide in the corner, shooting the occasional three. I'm of the opinion you should have to EARN your playing time on the team. Right now Exum is a 3rd-string PG at best. The motivation SHOULD be that to get ANY time on a winning team, he needs to prove it. Right now he's producing the least of any of the rotation players. Yet he starts. Fortunately. Snyder is now yanking him early and starting Trey in the 2nd half. I don't think Exum GETS IT yet. Snyder had said a couple of times he's told Dante to be aggressive and not worry about making mistakes. Dante continues to ignore that advice.

Quin has started holding him accountable. I've seen him yank him out several times already in the beginning of quarters(like 2-3 mins in) after he shows weak-minded-ness and softness and not enough aggression. Last game he got him out after 3 mins in the first Q. In the third Q, he didn't start him, he got him in with 7:30 to go, Dante made a couple of TO and Quin took him out with 3:30 to go in the quarter. He didn't get him back in the game. Trey played the last 15:30 mins of the game without a sub.
