It is not up to the family whether to pursue criminal charges, it is up to the prosecutor. With the bloodwork evidence (not sure when this was done or what the SOL is in LA) it would be a slam dunk case, even without the cooperation by the family of the minor.
It was the 80's in rural Louisiana, so basically the 40's. I doubt it would have been an easy case. They was all still on that Jerry Lee Lewis type beat. I'm sure most the Louisiana politicians/judges were sleeping with teenagers themselves.

I was a Jazz fan way before I even knew what Malone did and what rape even was. It’s gross what Malone did and if he were on this team today, I’d want him off of it. Both of the statues seem to be crappy people. Which is part of the reason why I’d like to see this franchise build a contending team the right way, with good character players that can inspire young people. I’d never be caught wearing a Malone or Stockton jersey. Let’s idolize good fun basketball players, Not some anti vax conspiracy d bag and child rapist.

TBH, I’m already mostly checked out from being a fan. Give me another season or two of the last and I’ll definitely find another team to cheer for or another hobby. Honestly, Denver is a hard team not to like.
Stockton isnt crappy, he's old, stupid, and bored.

Malone is genuinely a low character person, not only because what he did, but his refusal to support the family or even acknowledge the kid's existence.

DA/SA is a much prevalent in MLB/NFL and it doesnt cause teams to lose all their fans. I know the NBA is different because of the magnification of the individual (though there are examples of high profile QB's having things as well, like Big Ben), but people would move past it, especially if Bridges doesnt regress.

WTH did Stockton do?

Even if he was a good citizen/role model or whatever why would we want him even then. He’s not going to get us a chip. Just another guy, though better than Collins, he’s not getting us a chip and he’s going to want to get paid like a superstar just like Collins, I’m assuming.

Ultimately, yes. But in many dated potential charges like this, prosecutors are going to weigh heavy on victim/family cooperation.
The only thing that makes sense is a criminal complaint was never filed. Still, if the prosecutor's office or police department becomes aware of it, they can and generally do pursue.

Victim/family cooperation comes into play for evidentiary support. Generally, when you need the victim's testimony, and they won't cooperate, the Prosecutor may not bring a case as they know it would be to difficult to win. In this case with a pregnancy, cooperation would not be needed.

Now if the victim is in the age group of the defendent, I have seen prosecutorial discretion come into play (say an 18 yr old and 16 year old that go to the same school). Utah consent with a peer is 15 IIRC.

No excuse with a 13 and 19 year old. Then again, maybe that's how it is in LA.

When people try to minimize **** like domestic violence and make it less of a big deal than it is, there's often some skin in the game. What you say about this **** impacts what people think about you, and it should.

And to follow: remember there will always be someone reading who does hurt someone that loves them -- this **** is tragically common, which is why this matters. **** Miles Bridges, this isn't just about litigating one man's past.

She was actually 12 at conception. Most states have 24 month "ladders" in their statues after age 12. Meaning, 13 and over can consent as long as within 24 months of partner. I was recently saw a juvenile court hearing with two 11 year old parents that didn't look nearly that old. Both 10 at their child's conception. Grandma was 26.

They are actually called Romeo and Juliet laws for children who are both under the age of consent. My state does not have them. Other states vary in age of consent, some as low as 13. Most states, including Utah have provisions affording an exemption for peer groups once the age of consent is met. So while consent is 15 in Utah, a 30 yr old cannot have sex with a 15 year old...

This take isn't wrong but it doesn't make it right either. A lot of dodgy **** went down in the day.

Throwing up the Karl Malone parable makes no sense to me either, something that by todays standards is inexcusable that happened 40 years ago is used as an excuse to do things that are inexcusable today, by todays standards makes no sense.

Ah a discussion about a wife beater leads to a discussion about consent laws, isn't it lovely living in Saudi Arabia?

It is a discussion that asked what type of players you'd want on the team. The Malone question was on point.

I mean Kobe Bryant was a rapist, he seems to have a pretty decent legacy.

Not necessarily Bridges. But we have a decision to make this summer. Either we buy or sell everyone with Lauri included. Our roster is simply too good (and too old) to tank all the way.
