two incidents involving the word "faux" and my daughter
Some years back, when she was in high school, some of the girls were wearing furry leg warmers in the winter. She asked one of her friends about them, and the girl told her it was "faux fur" - - which my sweet girl heard as "fofer". She comes home and said she wants a pair of "fofers" - - so we go traipsing through the mall from store to store asking if they carry "fofers" - - the sales clerks all looked at us sort of strange until in one store one of them asked her to describe what she was looking for, and then directed us to where we could find leg-warmers, and we found a fuzzy pair that were just what she was wanted.
Then a year or two later when she was in college, she was wearing an imitation leather jacket and one of her friends commented on her new "leather" jacket - so she told her friend it was "FOX LEATHER" - - well the friend tells her there's no such thing as "fox leather" and they have a bit of an argument about it.
Later that evening she calls me, irritated, and asks me why her girlfriend would say she was lying when she said her jacket was "fox" leather.
I'm like "Huh? What are you talking about?" and she says "It's not real leather, it's fox leather - you know, imitation leather."
I said "You mean like "F-A-U-X" and she says "Yes, fox" and I tell her it's pronounced "FOE" - - so after a few seconds, the light bulb goes off, and she says "Oh, like faux fur?" and we both have a good laugh about the time we went looking for "Fofers" at the mall!
we still periodically joke about this - - in fact, it's been a while. maybe she's due for a reminder
